I've only seen 1404 as Dawn of Discovery in the DS version, Hugehead.
Then again, I haven't checked in awhile.

I've played a good bit of Anno 1404 (Known in the USA as Dawn of Discovery) and enjoyed it greatly. While Tropico is about building your people a place to live and trying to stay in office, Anno is much more of a game about building your empire and getting complex production chains setup.

EDIT: Obviously this is based on my experience with 1404, but I imagine 2070 is fairly similar.

Each iteration is quite different and usually not in a good way. It's been a downward trend in complexity so far. I've played the very first and each one since.

First glance, Anno looks like Tropico style game, that sound right?

The latest Anno is one of those games that should be good (assuming you like these types of games) but feels pretty shallow and dull once you actually start playing it. I'd stick with Tropico if I was you, unless you can get Anno really cheap.

I'm seeing it as a dumbed down version of sim city with a bunch of transport quests and simple fighting.

I would say it is more complex than SimCity, in that there are more elements to control. Though I guess I haven't played a SimCity in a long time so maybe I forget what it's like.

I felt that the combat elements were a distraction, though.

Hrm, well when I say sim city I mean the more advanced city builder games. And those have 100 times more elements to control. Anno basically just tells you what you need to build, and then you build it. But maybe I haven't gotten further enough into it.

Anno 2070's DRM is enough to turn me off.

Anno 2070's DRM is enough to turn me off.
You could buy it and then fix the drm if you want.
Then again, if you do that you could just get one of the previous anno.

Heh... when it's down to under $10 we'll talk ;)
$4-8 is about the price I'd be willing to pay for the privilege of using a game I own whenever the maker feels like.

The DRM cripples your "mothership" if you mess with it.

The Arks. What else acts like a mothership? They have upgrades but they reside on the Ubi server. No DRM, no server, no Ark upgrades.

What the balls. That is one of the most idiotic DRM systems ever.

To be fair, this was the last game Ubisoft decided to use their batshit insane DRM policies now. They've switched to more rational ones now (if any). Better late then never.

Don't get me wrong here, that's bullshit and all. But it's pretty clever, I'll give them credit where it's due.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.
