Is M&B: Fire and Sword any better than the original? Or is the Fire and Sword mod pretty much it?

Fire and sword is only a step or two away from a mod, and not a great one at that. if you have warband, just download Prophecy of Pendor and you will have a better game for nothing.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is crazy good. And multiplayer is a blast, but uses GFWL, and so it's all dead by now

F&S guns make singleplayer a real drag; warband & vanilla, you went around wrecking the enemies with allied troops essentially only used as meatshields to keep all the enemy archers off you while you did all the killing. F&S guns means you can and will be shot and knocked unconscious if you so much as think about running in for some actual combat. It basically forces you to sit back and give orders to troops in a game in which troop AI is terrible at the best of times and giving orders feels about as useful as going AFK. The whole fun of the M&B series is the combat; and F&S sorta prevents you from getting involved in it when a peasant with a gun takes you down from halfway across the map. I've seen some cool stuff with the multiplayer involving actual formations and such, but unless you are in a group dedicated to such things, I would say avoid F&S.
