If you're going to recommend this, might as well recommend Spring as well. Zero-K or one of the handful of TA expies (well, last time I played spring, which was a bit ago. No clue what it's like these days, game wise.) are nice~

Yeah, definitely Spring.

If he is a RTS player from the era of C&C and AoW, he'd likely be a Total Annihilation fan as well.  This is widely regarded at the pinnacle of that sort of RTS evolution, and Spring is it's fan made open source remake.

There are lots of mods and custom games built on the Spring engine, so plenty there to play with.

Supreme Commander is a big budget TA remake that pushes some nice buttons.  It is fairly nuanced, but as a big time commercial game it will never have the anal retentive attention to detail that some of those fan made Spring hacks have.

These opinions are second hand though.  I haven't been an RTS player in a long time and have only played these games a little bit, so I'm regurgitating things I've heard others say.  Based on my limited experience, these views seem legit.

I don't think 'discriminated' was the word you were looking for there Felius, but I'm pretty sure its correct otherwise.
No, it was exactly word actually. :P

Also this:
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that if you expect it to be AC "but better" you'll probably be disappointed. That's just kind of how nostalgia works. Nothing is going to meet your idealized perception of a beloved thing.

It could still be good, just as Civ5 and Civ4 are both good.
gets a gold star from me. These forums got me to the point where basically no game was anticipated to be good, or was good on release, unless it was an entirely new concept, solely because nostalgia and comparison reign supreme here. I've had to spend way less time here just to get myself out of that mindset and actually get to enjoy games again. :-\

Edit: Also also, hey neat cheap Fallout. I should pick those up and actually play them. I've heard great things about the first 2 and the 3rd/it's expansion and it'd be cool to finally try them all.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

I took me four or five tries over a period of years to finally make some progress in the first Fallout. I have since finished it, but it's just so old and clunky that it was painful to get started. Awesome game once I actually got into it though.

Since someone mentioned Supreme Commander, here's a tip maybe one out of one billion people might find useful.

I bought a physical copy of SupCom way back when it was first released and I've kept it with me all this while. I had a hankering to play some more SupCom and Forged Alliance last week but I only ever bought SupCom.

So I put in my CD key into Steam and voila. It gave me SupCom and Forged Alliance. So if anyone else has SupCom keys lying around, check out Steam and see if it'll give you the expansion for free too.

Ah, the wonderful gamble that is slapping cd keys from old things into Steam. I found a copy of Half Life(pre Steam) at a flea market once, stuck its key into Steam on a whim, and wham blam Half Life Platinum Pack is added to my library. Good thing, too, since the installer couldn't comprehend that computers could have more than 2gb of RAM and I had some lovely sign overflow when trying to install it from the CD.

Same here, my orange vanilla half-life 1 CD gave me Opposing Force and Blue Shift when I eventually registered its key on Steam.  Might just be a "thank you" for all us long-time customers and fans.

I think it also "gave" me Ricochet, though that was always a free mod...  Dunno.  Jeez, I wonder if there are still servers for that game.  It wasn't anything special but it was good for some laughs and fun at LAN parties.

there's nothing wrong with a cheap laugh NO BAD TOASTER

Any good RTS games going on sale lately?  My dad's looking for one and he just got on Steam.  He tried Company of Heroes over the weekend, but it wasn't his taste; he's a big fan of the first Red Alert and AoEII.

I haven't played red alert, but I have played AoE, and base don that, I am going to recommend the stronghold and settlers series. Don't underestimate the original stronghold and stronghold crusaders either, they are probably the best.

So The Forest is on sale for 33% off, bringing it down to $11 CAD. Is it worth the buy? The steam reviews seem to think so (92% of almost 20,000 reviews are positive) but it is early access, and I'm super skeptical about early access.

Opinions? Anyone played it and can recommend/steer me away?

--RTS comments--

TA/SupCom are great games and I love them, but he's not a fan of futuristic settings, so they're sadly out- good suggestions, though.  He prefers more straightforward gameplay, which may be what drove him away from CoH2 (I haven't played it myself and he wasn't clear on what he didn't like about it.

I'll look into OpenRA.  I think he'd like Generals as well (with Zero Hour, one of the best expacks ever made) but I've had trouble convincing him to try it.  Too bad it's not on Steam.

Stronghold... good thought.  I'll swing him that way.

I'm really curious which other games Steam honors like that now, if SupCom counts too.

For an Alpha it runs pretty well. The AI is pretty jumpy from tarzaning trees to dragging fallen allies and such. Content wise though its pretty dull. Theres only two range weapons in the game and it takes a really long time for building forts when you are alone. for $11cad i say thats cheap enough to buy it. Each patch includes a new feature so the Devs are putting alot of work into this game. Buy it, play it for a bit, wait for a couple of patches and play again.

also what
EDIT: Like seriously, I think you might be confusing The Forest with another game. The Forest is a survival horror game on a islands full of cannibals and mutants. For anything murderous is the constant piles of fellow passengers bound up and stripped of flesh and blood from their bodies. Including the fact that eventually the story mode will be about finding a lost child, I'm really lost on the second degree murder charges.

You might be referring to The Hatred which is nothing new for me. Is it really fucking new that you can play a game where you mass murder people? I mean its only different is the game is based around the idea of random killing. Fucking GTA is mostly spent on going rampages on random civilians. Manhunt was literally going close on howto kill. You all remember that Airport level in Call of Duty series right? You got the choice, you don't have to take it but its there. The Hatred is just throwing that choice out the window and its a dev decision. All I care about if the game is good to play.
