So Contagion is 75% off for 5 bucks and has most of a whole day left on its free weekend. At first glance it seems like a Left 4 Dead / standard co-op zombie shooter. At second glance it claims not to be and that's not an entirely hollow claim. I think every single game mode (I could be forgetting one) is a sort of asymmetric player-vs-player and co-op (with the definite exception of Hunted, which is simply a free-for-all last-man standing mode where dying turns you into a zombie).

Most game modes start with one or two of the 8-16 players infected. They have no prior warning and will start turning almost immediately. From there they play as a fast zombie (who can gather a horde to follow them, if the mode has AI zombies). The zombie side's objective is, obviously, to kill all survivors. Survivors are either attempting a semi-randomized series of objectives (in Escape and Panic Objective), extract AI survivors from houses and fight AI zombies in waves (Extraction), or to kill a certain number of zombies (Panic Classic).

Game flow is usually fairly slow and a little clunky; the game is definitely not meant to be a fast-paced shooter. I bring it up because I apparently just spent three or four straight hours playing Panic Classic, which reminds me a (very tiny) bit of Natural Selection 2. The survivors start scattered about the map and race to get equipment and a defensive position; once the infected amongst them turn, the zombies must pick off stragglers and find a way to assault the survivor's position before losing too many of their own lives. (un)Dying is actually a lot of fun if anyone takes charge, as the original Infected are zombies in riot armor (and thus extremely hard to damage everywhere except the front of the head, and still very durable even then). So it becomes a matter of amassing a big enough horde to behind a pair of tanks to outmaneuver the survivor's headshots.

The tl;dr is that when it works it works really well as a 'player zombies figure out ways to assault the guys usually effectively headshotting them'. I wanted to bring it up just so there's a better chance there'll be folks playing once the free weekend is over (though I really have no clue as to the health of the game on non-free weekends).

For those of you that are unaware, Contagion used to be a mod called Zombie Panic. I remember it being really fun.

Hexcells is just a buck on Steam this week.  If you like puzzle games, give it a try.

It looks like Minesweeper with a hex grid, but it's not quite.  It's actually a set of lovingly handcrafted puzzles using game mechanics I've never seen before.

Half the game is tutorials.  The real puzzles are too easy, and there aren't enough of them.  But if you like the flavor of the game, you move onto Hexcells Plus, which is actually a challenge.

I'm currently struggling through Hexcells Infinite, which just came out today.  It gets mindbendingly difficult.

Simcity 2013 is $6 at Gamestop, providing you with an Origin code. US only. I know, it's no Simcity 4, but I've just gotten it. At this price, I figure I can fight past the various issues and have some fun.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't get 4 to run recently without some serious graphical issues.

Be warned, however, that it's only really fun with at least one friend. Going solo isn't that enjoyable.

Same.  Steam says I've played (OMG!) over 1900 hours.

That figure is too high because I have a habit of suspending the process instead of quitting if I plan to play again soon.  But I'd guess my real game time is over 1000 hours.  All solo.
