Which is good marketing, really.  Put the base game on sale, people buy it, then put the DLC on sale.

That's not how DLC works. Play the game for awhile and notice DLC is what should have been in the game so you feel okay buying it because you just got the base game for 50-75% off. The DLC would push your total spending to base game without the discount and the world has been justified.

Well, I'm talking about Steam, not publishers.  Steam doesn't tell them what to put in the game.

I find it somewhat amusing that Skyrim is on sale for less than Morrowind and Oblivion right now. :P

As for me, the game I'm looking at is Saint's Row 4, since I'm having so much fun with 3. Hoping for more than a 33% discount, but I realize it's a new game, so we'll see. If not, I'll check in again around christmas time.

Any recommendations as to whether the Skyrim Legendary Edition is worth the extra money compared to the base game?

Since it is time again for the Steam Holiday Sale I thought I would repost the rules to remember when buying things during the Holiday Sale:

Rule #1:
From now until the LAST DAY of the sale, if a game is on sale as a daily deal or flash deal, you can buy it. If it is only "on sale" through January 2nd, pass. Do not buy. Save your money (you may need it).

Rule #2:
Check each day for the daily deals, and monitor flash deals. As games come up that you want, you can get them. Just continue to exercise self control for games that are not a daily/flash deal.

Rule #3:
You can purchase the large packs, such as the THQ pack or Square-Enix/Eidos pack at any time if you wish. It is extremely unlikely that those bundles will be discounted any further, even though individual games in those packs may become daily deals. If you want a bundle, go for it. Lots of games, excellent price.

Rule #4:
On the LAST DAY of the sale, Steam traditionally makes its daily deals an encore of the most popular daily deals from the previous days. Go nuts. Buy everything you wanted. New games are almost never on the daily deals during the last day. At this point, it is safe to buy anything else you've been waiting on.

Rule #5:
If you miss a game from a daily deal, STILL DO NOT BUY IT until the last day. As I said, the final day often recaps previous days' daily deals, so there is still a chance the game you missed could come around as a daily deal again. Don't rush it. If it doesn't, you can still buy it at the standard sale price on the last day, and just be sad you missed the daily deal. Just remember that if you missed it on one day, it's not necessarily too late. Save money by keeping a cool head.

This is just copy pasta so if anything has changed this year let me/us know!

Happy hunting and Happy holidays!

I'm really looking forward to buying EU4, but I'm not sure if it will go on sale again so soon after the last one, and if it's going to be more than 50% discount. Can anyone tell me?

Well, it was at 50% off just the other week, so I highly doubt it will go any lower over the course of this Steam sale. Chances are okay that they'll bring back the 50% off for a day though.

I would say yes, but only because many mods have simply dropped support for the base game. The actual content in the expansions is forgettable, in my opinion. If you're not that into modding, you aren't missing too much.

The Absolute Necessities (SkyUI and the Unofficial Patches) work just fine without the new content.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Thanks Bauglir. I'll just tell myself it's only two hours of work more.

Interesting. Good games on sale on the DDs, but I own all the ones I want.
