My main gripe with Evil Genius is that there's no speedup feature, and you end up just... staring... for far too long.

As far as games go, though, that's really not that bad of a criticism. I also honestly didn't have that many issues with it, but then again, I cheated and spent all my time building the base with infinite monies, so there probably is a lot of waiting.

It was a great, fun game, but once you figured out the mechanics (around when I got to the second island), there was certainly a ton of waiting and tedious aspects to it. While I never "finished" the game, I would say it is easily worth its current price of $2.50. I got 28 hours of gameplay out of it.

My main gripe (and easily cheated, fortunately) with Evil Genius was the really low minion cap, and the need to have VERY SPECIFIC minion combinations for the missions later on. So you ended having to suicide your snipers or heavies because you had made too many and needed more guards or mercs, and same for the other 2 minion branches. A lot of these combinations were mutually exclusive, even, so for one mission you needed a ton of TV spindoctors, but for another you needed a lot of quantum physicists, and it was just impossible to have both at that amount.

I got really annoyed trying to keep social minions alive. They seemed to die in droves compared to the rest.

Age of Wonders (GoG) is the only game I've seen to really recreate Master of Magic's excellent magic system.  The tactical combat is great but probably very much like the modern HoM&M games (I wouldn't know, personally).  Here's KoF's review from earlier:

Age of Wonders is one of my favorite series.

The first one has the best custom hero making. Magic is a huge boon, but it's not really a requirement. The second one switches your hero's focus to magic all day and night and really expands on the magic system. The third one is basically the second one, but better and with one of the best unofficial patches you'll ever see in a game.

If you don't want to play through the entire series, the third one's the one to get. It's pretty awesome.

More detail:

It's a turn based strategy game. You control a hero (Or, in the second and third games, a wizard) who runs around killing other dudes. You choose from a variety of races (Dwarves, Elves, Humans, Halflings, Orcs, Goblins, Undead, Nomads, Cat People, Angel People, Dark Elves, Snow People... The third one adds two races, the Shadow Realm peoples and the Shadow Realm demons. There may be a couple more I can't think off of the top of my head), and train up an army to go kill the other dudes' dudes, and maybe even the other dude. Each race is different enough, though they all have the same number of units available to them. Your regular dudes can gain three levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold), while heroes can earn a bunch of levels. In the main campaign you keep all your heroes and can bring over well trained dudes, too.

Magic plays a huge role in the game. You research spells, find spells, trade spells, and then use them. There's the generic combat spells, the buff spells, the enchantment spells, and the cool overland spells that can do stuff like completely change landscapes. As the undead, you can drop a spell that turns your lands into a waste so you can get a bonus to your income. Because you're undead.

The game has two layers: Overland and Combat. In the overland you manage your cities, tell your troops to go places, research, and all that jazz. In Combat, you attack cities, farms, troops, neutral monsters, and stuff. You can do combat automatically, but you generally lose a few dudes if you do that.

The best part of the series is, without a doubt, the level editor. If you like sitting down and creating a fantasy world with humongous caverns and armies and epic battles, AoW is worth it just for that. The map editor is truly fantastic, and it's really easy to use.

It's a great game. The third one, Shadow Magic, is one of my all-time favorite games ever. The first one is probably truer to the Lord of the Rings feel the game was going for, but after that it went its own direction, and it worked out very well.

For some reason I hit the interface pretty hard and couldn't get into it, but I haven't had too much patience lately. I've heard mostly good things about it, and the general opinion of it is pretty high. I wonder how much of it is nostalgia? It seems to have some fair depth, so perhaps not a lot.

Hate Plus is 10% off. I've heard it being mentioned here and there, is it worth the 9 bucks in anyone's opinion?

Apparently it's a sequel, would I need to buy the first game in the series to get what's happening in it?

Considering that Hate Plus is a direct sequel of Analogue: A Hate Story and draws on completion data from said game to influence events in the sequel, I'd say yes.

Yes, I'd say you need Analogue: A Hate Story to understand what's going on, and to get some of the endings.

Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics for $5. A good price if you don't have them.

Argh. I'd be tempted just to own a copy of Tactics.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

Don't Starve is 50% off.

How have we ended up feeling about this, in the long run?

I don't find it terribly entertaining, personally. Then again, I don't find Minecraft or Terraria entertaining playing them alone, either. I think my interest is just too flighty to get into it.

I have it and I'm really not too thrilled. It feels grindy and it has permadeath. Bad combination, in my opinion. Progression seems slow, but I'm not that great at the game either. The art style is cool, but the gameplay is meh.

I've played a bit of Tactics and it weird.  I'll leave it at that.
For Fallout 1 and 2, and for those who wish to experiment with tactics, it's definitely worth it.
