Ys I & II specifically, looking at it. Which would make the answer be: If you like the early Ys gameplay (Note: I don't actually know how much/if it changes much later into the series, ha.), probably. I mean, it's alright gameplay and they are kinda' classics, but they're also pretty dated imo. At least from what I remember. Wouldn't be a terrible fiver to drop if you've never played 'em on the earlier consoles(and/or emulators) and whatnot.

-Get the total restoration or whatever fan mod. It will be a drag to install, but worth it.
-Don't be ashamed to cheat your way out of the first dungeon if you want to play a non-melee character

Just to add, it pops up in the top 10 of 'Best RPGs of All Time' lists - usually near the top - because it is one of the best RPGs of all time.

Gritty, funny, sad, wild, enjoyable experience that seems - to me anyway - to be a little more fun and replayable than the more recent Fallout games (although I still love them).

If you don't have Fallout and Fallout 2 in your games collection, you can never call yourself an RPG fan!

So far, all I've really achieved is killing Benjamin Franklin with a radioactive flag. Not regretting this purchase one bit.

Isn't the total restoration mod the one that adds in a shit ton of uncompleted stuff, or are you talking about the unofficial patch? Definitely get the patch, but the total total one adds in some stuff that the devs took out for good reason, like a JRPG antagonist. Worst set of encounters ever, basically meant reloading constantly to avoid them for me until I gave up and started again without it. I've also heard there a bunch of occasional (semi-rare?) gamebreaking bugs though don't quote me on that one.

If you played New Vegas, going into FO2's New Reno becomes a retroactive disappointment. A 15 year old game did Vegas better than Vegas. And there's this certain something in the graphics of old Fallouts that makes them feel more... post-apocalipticky-Californian? than the 3D games do. Strongly recommending.

Having also not played any other (except 4) I'd recommend it. It's got a great, light-hearted feel to all of it and some parts might even merit being called funny.
It also has a lot of content (DLCs making that even more), with a respectably long campaign that gets challenging enough slowly enough.

I 2nd the recommendation I have only played 4 but it really good.

Tropico 4 is fun. As you may know they're a series of small city building games where you take the role of "El Presidente" of a banana republic. Fun lies in building your city, abusing your power to fill your swiss bank account, suppressing or otherwise denying your citizens things you find disruptive as well as meeting the wishes of the greater powers in the world around you (US and USSR mostly, though 4 adds Middle East, China and the UN).

In the first Tropico you had the difficulty of trying to balance the happiness of multiple groups that were made up of your citizens. Groups like the Intellectual faction who dislike military buildings and the Militant faction who wish for a well supplied military would make pleasing one be at the cost of the other.

This still exists in the 4th game, though it's not as harsh and it's generally easier to please everyone.

That being said, I can certainly recommend it as it's still a really well made game, and since you haven't got Tropico 3 I can definitely say you should get Tropico 4 (4 is kind of a large expansion to 3) if you enjoy city building and management games. Once you get used to it you might want to up the difficulty a bit to make it harder to please everyone.

Ys is Japanese and is a role-playing game, but I wouldn't call it a JRPG.

I beat Oath of Felghana on my PSP a while back. I don't know how similar the older ones are, but it can get pretty difficult. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Roughly "Not even remotely" in terms of mechanics. They're action RPGs that's probably closer (if not exactly close) to something like Zelda than Final Fantasy, at least early on (again, I don't have any exposure past like the second or third one). They've got leveling and whatnot but from what I recall (and mind, I'm recalling from many years back and the console version, so the chronicle stuff may be somewhat different and I could totes be misremembering) there's not much need or emphasis on grind. It's a pretty different experience than your average JRPG.

Story wise, it's been literal years, like, decade or something since I've played a Ys. I don't remember, ha. Did watch through most of the LP for the thing you're considering fairly recently and it seemed decent enough if far from groundbreaking nowadays... which is understandable because Ys was breaking ground back in the flipping 80s. The series is pretty old, and chronicles is a remake of the first two. So it kinda' depends on what you're looking for. If it's innovation or something modern, Ys Chronicles probably isn't where you're going to look. They're a polishing of something rather old, insofar as games go. Good, so far as that goes, but it is what it is.
