I really kinda like the Sentry change, mostly because they were 100% useless before. At the very least, it's now possible to research Disguised Sentries (which are somewhat useful) without needing a whole bunch of carefully-arranged Topside Shacks and 24/7 supervision. Even indoors, they're basically a trap that doesn't hurt minions but requires carefully-timed tagging instead.

The minion cap upgrade is debatable. On the one hand, it makes the game considerably easier. On the other hand, it means you don't have to dedicate half your base to lockers (get more minions earlier in the game), and can have enough minions to complete every AoI without killing off and retraining half your forces.

That said, ultimately it's your choice to install the Unofficial Patch. It's not a 100% requirement (unlike some games, *cough* V:TM:B *cough* Saints Row 2 *cough*), since I don't think there are any crash bugs or major issues that get fixed by it. I still prefer playing with the patch, though.

There is.

I don't remember but it also might fix the resort glitches (resorts break the game... most players don't experience this because resorts aren't a requirement)

In fact if anyone here gets Evil Genius, don't build resorts or any of the guest buildings. They will break your game.

Gamersgate just started their summer sales thing, and it's pretty massive. Might be worth a look.

I wonder when Unity of Command is gonna be on a decent sale...

I got the walking dead game specifically for my older sister who loves that series! :D

But I am seriously running out of cash... though... given I might not have much trouble with that.

I think this topic title should be more general than "Steam" sales. Not sure what would be good...but, "PC gaming deals" or something. Since a lot of the time, people post stuff other than Steam sales. And also, that way its all in one thread. Or someone can make a new thread for it...in any case...

Any good deals on Gamersgate you guys recommend? I can spend 15 usd or less, preferably less (like 10 would probably be kinda optimal, since I want to gift a friend another 10 dollar game)...but I can go 15 if the game is really worth it. I saw Kingdom of Amalur is pretty cheap and there was quite a few people that liked it (I think, TotalBiscuit did anyway), but I dunno...I got bored of the demo rather quickly and heard later on the game starts lacking. So I'll probably skip that one.

(edit: How is age of wonders? Never played it, but friend says its sorta like warlords battlecry (or reminds him of it)? I can get the trilogy for 10 dollars)

Age of Wonders is one of my favorite series.

The first one has the best custom hero making. Magic is a huge boon, but it's not really a requirement. The second one switches your hero's focus to magic all day and night and really expands on the magic system. The third one is basically the second one, but better and with one of the best unofficial patches you'll ever see in a game.

If you don't want to play through the entire series, the third one's the one to get. It's pretty awesome.

More detail:

It's a turn based strategy game. You control a hero (Or, in the second and third games, a wizard) who runs around killing other dudes. You choose from a variety of races (Dwarves, Elves, Humans, Halflings, Orcs, Goblins, Undead, Nomads, Cat People, Angel People, Dark Elves, Snow People... The third one adds two races, the Shadow Realm peoples and the Shadow Realm demons. There may be a couple more I can't think off of the top of my head), and train up an army to go kill the other dudes' dudes, and maybe even the other dude. Each race is different enough, though they all have the same number of units available to them. Your regular dudes can gain three levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold), while heroes can earn a bunch of levels. In the main campaign you keep all your heroes and can bring over well trained dudes, too.

Magic plays a huge role in the game. You research spells, find spells, trade spells, and then use them. There's the generic combat spells, the buff spells, the enchantment spells, and the cool overland spells that can do stuff like completely change landscapes. As the undead, you can drop a spell that turns your lands into a waste so you can get a bonus to your income. Because you're undead.

The game has two layers: Overland and Combat. In the overland you manage your cities, tell your troops to go places, research, and all that jazz. In Combat, you attack cities, farms, troops, neutral monsters, and stuff. You can do combat automatically, but you generally lose a few dudes if you do that.

The best part of the series is, without a doubt, the level editor. If you like sitting down and creating a fantasy world with humongous caverns and armies and epic battles, AoW is worth it just for that. The map editor is truly fantastic, and it's really easy to use.

It's a great game. The third one, Shadow Magic, is one of my all-time favorite games ever. The first one is probably truer to the Lord of the Rings feel the game was going for, but after that it went its own direction, and it worked out very well.

Age of Wonders does sound rather awesome. And been watching someones lets play on the first age of wonders (only on first video still though). I see a lot of units have stories behind them, does that remain true in the 2nd and 3rd? I always like things like that.

Think it will go more than 50% over there on gamersgate? I think the rule is to not pay right away and see if there is a better deal, and if not pay for it on the last day of sale or something.

Amazon already has its own and i thought i have seen a GamersGate thread, i am the first though since the happy thread was flooded with the steam sales and this was a good idea at the time to separate them out. I didn't want to combine them though because every market has a huge list and this thread can become unbearable with everyone talking about them. I honestly stop caring about people discussing other vendor's sales just as long its a steam game. I will rethink about this though down the road probably after steam's summer sale(since most of the vendors seem to make sure their own sales week so far) but for the record i wouldn't care just remember the two page limit on one game discussion.

What do you mean the units have stories behind them? I've played the games, and Shadow Magic is the best by far (although AoW 3 isn't out yet, from my understanding. SM is AoW2 + stuff, not truly AoW3). I don't recall anything like that though.

I'm watching

And in the video, the halflings all had some lore behind them. Well actually, it had some long description of some kind so I assume its lore...I didn't pause the video to read, cause I would rather not spoil it and find out in the game itself. So I could be wrong.

My bad, I thought I had played the first one but it looks like I haven't. I'm pretty sure there's still some lore going on (and the campaign storylines have plenty of it), but I don't specifically recall something like the book pages for outlining stuff about the halflings. It was like half lore, half mission objectives in that video.

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic is pretty good, I enjoyed it. Unfortunately, I don't play a lot of Turn-based Strategy games so I can't really compare it to much else. It was out when Computer Gaming World was still around and there's a Tom vs. Bruce playthrough that sparked my interest in it. Check it out for yourself. http://www.1up.com/features/tom-bruce-9

Yeah, all units have a little description, even if it's just a paragraph. Even the default wizards have some pretty good descriptions, though most of them are fairly generic "He was a cool/bad guy" stuff.

-sneeeeep-

This has kinda convinced me to take the plunge. Looks like a fun game and it's pretty damn cheap now too.
Had a look at the others in the series, but SM looked like it'd be more suitable for me, cuz combat changes 'n' ting.

Half-Life 2 is seventy five percent off for midweek madness. (75% off HL2.)

I feel that the game's reputation precedes it, so I'll stop there.

Also, the Need for Speed Franchise is 70% off, but I don't know much about them-any description I'd give would do no justice.

Depending on the game and difficulty level, need for speed sits somewhere between loose arcade racers and the more hardcore driving simulators. I've played a couple of these games on a PS3 and enjoyed them quite a bit, they have decent if repetitive soundtracks and customizable game play and vehicles.
