Sins of a Solar Empire was a very pretty grand Real-time strategy.  I don't know anything about Rebellion though.  I fondly remember bombarding planets and it looking good, but the series was pretty forgettable.
As someone who beta-tested for Stardock's OS/2 games back in the 90's...
Don't get me wrong though, it was fun for a couple weeks.  Very pretty.

I've heard good things about Rebellion's total conversion mods into stuff like Star Wars/Trek and Halo. Its been on my wishlist for awhile because of that.

Star Ruler 2 seems like a better game and a better base for building on - and it's possible to add new races/shipsets without removing the existing ones.

This guy has made stargate, star wars, and battlestar galactica mods: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198007440910/myworkshopfiles/?appid=282590

(They appear to require the expansion now, hmm. Well, I couldn't really run them anyways, personally, since they used such high resolution models/textures/whatever that my 1 GB video card couldn't handle it.)

Road Redemption's all right. If you played Road Rash back in the day and want more of that, or if you like combat racers, I would suggest picking it up.

So ubisoft apparently is celebrating its 30'th birthday (and their last birthday before vivendi takes over) and gives away a "legendary" game every month.
Starting with Prince of Persia Sands of time in June and they will apparently drop a new game every month till the end of the year.
Also the next game in this giveaway will be... Splinter cell. starting on 13'th of July.
I don't know if that makes invalidates sands of time inaccessible or not but hey free games.

Oh and of course you need Uplay

Assassin's Creed has no combat system. All you do is hold block and ocassionally hit the attack button.

There is pretty much no similarity between Arkham combat and AC combat, beyond the existence of fighting in the games.

All three are counter-driven systems punctuated by special ability use. Please don't act like either SoM or Arkham require more than clicking a button or countering, please. I've played more than enough of all three games across their entire series to feel comfortable saying that. They're all counter-kill combo fighting systems. SoM just has more "Fuck you" enemies that then invalidate said counters.

Christ, AC has heavies, Arkham has shield guys, SoM has guys just invulnerable to counters. The same combat system flavored three different ways.

Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion (-75%) and Road Redemption (-30%) are on sale right now. What's your opinion?

Road Redemption is good if you want a sort of casual motorcycle racing game with an emphasis on violence. Liking Road Rash, I was very satisfied with Road Redemption. It's still getting updates so it's not even through development yet, but the devs are active and I've been impressed with the progress the game has made over the last year or so.

Perhaps, but its much clearer in AsCr. You either kill a guy during the fight or nothing happens there because they're too busy being polite to attack you.

Posting to back this up, because it's fact. Shadow of Mordor's combat system was pretty much ripped straight from the Arkham games. You hit X to do a light attack, Hit Y to counter, hit B to stun, follow up a stun with lots of light attacks for a flurry, hold RT and hit X to finish downed enemies... almost everything is exactly the same. Hell, you even have a rapid dagger throwing ability in Shadow of Mordor which is functionally identical to Arkham's batarangs.

It's pretty much Arkham Mordor. Anyone who denies that is lying to themselves.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly how the game was described to me when I first heard about it.

There is much more nuance to the Arkham combat system than AC though, as Nighthawk pointed out. Mordor is much more similar to Arkham than it is to AC.

Indeed. Looking at my post in retrospect, I hope I didn't make it sound like the combat system rip was a bad thing. I fell in love with Arkham City's combat, and when it was tossed on top of a Middle Earth setting with swords, orcs and amazing slow-motion kill-moves, I was more than pleased (though I can't say everyone reacted the same way I did).

I find ME:SoM's combat to be easier than Arkham City's, but that's probably due to, like, instakill arrows fired from your bow of time slowing, etc. There isn't a whole lot in Arkham City which can instantly take out an enemy (Off the top of my head, I can only think of knocking folks off a ledge, which was sometimes/often impossible).

Not denying that at all. Although I think post-AC2 one should not sell AC combat so short. It has its moments of nuance too.

Still, they're three games from the same family tree. SoM is just the most refined of the three at this point. Arkham has the most fluid combat of all three IMO. SoM I felt like after a while just simply attacking guys was a great way to get stabbed in the back. By the end game, I felt like I was barely using my regular attacks at all. Or to put it into perspective, late game SoM feels like Arkham City when you're surrounded by nothing but Shield Guys, Knife Dudes and Stun Baton dudes.

Of course, if you want to spice up the combat in Shadow of Mordor, you can take out the attack icons that pop over orc heads when they're about to, well, attack you. I can't remember if Arkham and AC had this.
