Sins of a Solar Empire has a lot of very well made mods available that cover pretty much any scifi setting you can think of; Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate and Halo are the major ones.

These mods also often change the balance of the gameplay with more or less focus on capital ships, income and supply and so on. The major ones I recommend are "Star Trek: Armada 3", "Thrawn's Revenge II: Ascendancy", "Star Wars: Interregnum" and "Sins of the Prophets".

I also like a Star Wars mod called "Sins of a Galactic Empire". It focuses on scale with huge numbers of starfighters and things like Star Destroyers being mainline ships but the balance isn't the best and it can be pretty much impossible to beat the A.I. when they get established.

I really enjoy SoaSE and it's my most played game on Steam. However, there are some things with the game that mods can't fix and foremost amongst these is the A.I. The A.I. in SoaSE has an annoying habit of fleeing/avoiding battles it's outnumbered/outgunned in, even if that means giving up important planets including their capital.

The team that made the "Star Trek: Armada 3" mod, I consider the best mod for SoaSE, are hinting that they're making another Star Trek themed mod for Stellaris so that might be something to keep an eye out for.

"Warhammer: End Times -Vermintide" is having a free to play for the weekend if anyone has had thoughts about buying it. I've thought about it but I tend to only play singleplayer of games and people were mentioning that the A.I. isn't so good for singleplayer.

Live the dream life of smacking large numbers of man-sized rats around in a Left 4 Dead style FPS with random loot and 5 unique classes.

Slllllliiight necro to say the DW is on sale for 60% off. http://store.steampowered.com/app/261470/  :)

I think this might be the steepest discount I've seen for the game so far, so if the $$ always put you off now is your chance!

Vermintide is absolutely worth a look during the free weekend, assuming your PC can handle it. Note that it's pretty sensitive to network latency; hosting games tends to get you better results. Playing in someone's hosted game can tend to lead to less-than-faithful hit boxes and blocks. Not a huge deal for lower difficulty but on higher difficulties it can really make the difference.

At 159 hours played I'm kinda burnt out on it, even after the "Survival Mode" update and the new DLC maps. But it's totally worth every penny. It is perhaps the best representation of Skaven in a WHF game to date, and the melee play (when it's in-sync) is delightfully satisfying.

-edit- Guess I'm late on this as the weekend is over but w/e.

The Stanley Parable is on Steam's midweek madness sale for $3. I had a few hours of good fun, annoying a narrator.

Get games you own on steam for free on gog. Only there for select games, for a limited time, but you do get them permanently. Nice for getting soundtracks, artwork, and other things.

That, and, well... always nice to have a backup in case Steam cocks up at some point.

I think I only have one game on the list, but as scrdest said, one thing I worry about with Steam is if something awful happens, and then I lose me feckin' games.

With how often I have moved and / or replaced computers, I think I actually have greater security keeping games on Steam than I do on disk.

I used to be a major detractor, firmly in the "steam deletes your porn" camp (back when it had awful DRM and did search your computer for suspect files).

I've since come around.  The convenience of it is like Soma for the modern consumer, and I'm taking that drug without regret.  When the cascade collapse occurs and I can no longer access my games online, I'll be more busy looting supermarkets and being shot by my neighbors so it will be a moot point.

Oh hey, that's kinda' neat. Also neat is the message on failure has changed in the ~hour since I last tried it. "Due to exceedingly high demand this may take up to several days, please check back later. Thank you for your patience." Ahahaha.

Due to high demand this may take longer than the games are available to get in this way.

I think I saw a list of eligible games on the previous page and they all seemed to be valid for 5 days from now.

Fortunately it says above that "Your accounts are being connected", so hopefully we're in the queue...  Fingers crossed anyway!
