Oh Shi-apparently this is happening now....apparently the running goblins tipped off the minotaur. What now? Do I have a chance?

Minotaurs are semi megabeasts. I had an bear kill one, didn't have any chance to trap him. =/

Okay, now I'm doomed. The goblins have really returned this time, with something like 30+ invaders including jaberers and caged trolls. Every single goblin is also mounted, either on a toad or on a cave swallow. These guys are really, really persistent.

For future reference, make sure the goblins are using decent metals. Sometimes they don't have access to iron and are using stuff like copper and silver.

Their silver weapons were bouncing off leather cloaks at a pretty decent rate, and my bone armor didn't fare too poorly against it either. It can really help your chances.

Unless they're hammergoblins, in which case silver is pretty deadly.

If you're overwhelmed, close the doors and start digging.  Hopefully you planned ahead and harvested (or bought) as much wood as you could get your hands on for barrels and bins and beds.

Personally, I hate when the goblins get away... my defenses are designed with a bunch of 3-tile wide paths filled with dodge-this training spear traps with long narrow pits on either side.  The goblins get knocked off into the pits, but the exit to the pit takes them deeper into the traps, so they have to cross at least one section of dodge-this path in order to escape.  Draw them in, make it difficult for them to escape.  At a minimum, break some goblin bones before they get past the first section.

Any "border" pits towards the edge are rather shallow (1-3Z deep) and are designed more to trap the goblins and force them inward.  But the bottom of those pits are filled with the nastier weapon traps or cage traps.  Pits closer in, such as my main entrance ramp, are much deeper (at least 8Z and ideally 10-12Z).

I don't even bother with cage traps until the 2nd or 3rd layer of defenses.  And the lever-operated set of upright spear/spikes isn't until the 4th layer of defense.

Minotaurs and Gobbos aren't allied, are they?

With regard to archers, two things to remember:

All archers need quivers or they won't have any ammo.

By default the first 100 bolts are reserved for hunters unless you go into the military screen and change it. So if you get down below 100 bolts they'll just stop using the bolts.

I'm pretty sure that every time I've had the "archers inexplicably won't fire" it's ended up being one of those things.

You should be able to lure melee goblins in by throwing an animal over the wall (use a pit zone) then pepper them to death with arrows. Much fun target practice will be had and the melee fighters can go out later and clean up the pincushions who are slow to die.
