Am bored, challenge me.
« on: March 15, 2011, 05:50:16 am »

Alright DF community, I'm throwing myself at your mercy and I. Am. Terrified.

I'm bored, partly waiting for .22 update and partly just bored in general.  What sort of crazy challenge fort have always been too afraid/ashamed/unprepared to undertake?  What absurd megaproject needs to be done?  What insane victory and/or defeat scenario would be best?

Discuss.

EDIT: Also interested in mod ideas, things to add or alter for a bit more flavor.  If interesting enough, I may work on it.

Colonize (and dine in) hell, if not already done ? Survive in a terrifying tropical dry broadleaf forest without using any metal and no mechanisms ? Recreate Boatmurdered in 0.31.21 ? Get the fortress defense mod, hard version ? Make your fortress a dwarven fluid logic calculator ?

About modding, make DF more realistic. Give the more intelligent animals [CAN_LEARN], add more weapons, more armor, etc...

I did this already.  It just became a chore to capture the FB every season and add them to my collection.  Fun was had when a tantruming dwarf toppled a constructed cage and let out a fire breathing FB.  Significantly less fun was had when a tantruming dwarf destroyed a cage, and apparently destroyed the FB inside with his mighty naked fist.

Regardless, I'm currently thinking of running a Pop Cap 0 fort.  I get two migrant waves, as is hard-coded, and will keep my wealth low to discourage migrants.  After that, I rely on birthrate alone, although I'm likely to mod the maturity rate from 12 years to 10.  The only thing is, I'll do this somewhere absurd, like a terrifying tropical forest or something, and immediately wage war with humans, elves, and goblins.

Build a huge, three-dimentional Mortal Kombat logo(Stonesense here would be cool). Then build a subzero throwing ice while a scorpion is throwing his rope/snake/kunai/getoverhere thing;

Build a Zeus statue sitting down like they did in the old greek temples. Bonus points if you build an actual temple around it. Bonus if the temple is made entirely of marble(or limestone) blocks and the statue is made of solid gold(opposing hollow gold :P). Megabonus if you build all temples as depicted in greek history. Megadwarf bonus if you build a temple and statue out of bloodthorn and cover it all with elf blood. Blood for the blood god!;

Build a Sphinx and put a support holding its nose. Build your fort inside it(the nose being the entrance). Once you're happy with the amount of dwarves you have, colapse the nose on top of invaders;

Recreate ALL of the seven wonders of the old world, then the seven wonders of the new world. I'm brazilian, so I demand a PERFECT Cristo Redentor.
EDIT: Bonus points if each wonder is at a different embark site(so they acctually exist and then meet their downfall) AND if you build your fort INSIDE the wonder!

Gonna think of more...

EDIT(my mind is crawling with ideas): Instead of tunneling the mountain into a ground mole home, tunnel directly on the plain aboveground area(diggin, then, an ant colony home). Then build an above ground castle full of traps, treasure and monsters. When the castle is huge and interesting enough, close the fort and abandon. Return in adventure mode.(this is an old one, but cool nonetheless)

Try the Hermit if you haven't already.

Build a totem to armok made entirely of wooden cages with starving, naked elves inside. Bonus if you build the whole totem with intercalated supports between each cage, for when it reaches 50-Z you will pull the lever removing the supports For an easier outcome, span the totem 50-Z levels up, made of walls, and THEN place supports holding elves in cages. Once you're satisfied, pull a lever conected to EVERYTHING up there.

As for mods, mod your dwarves to be composed entirely of water, so that any attack against them turns them into a small puddle. Bonus if you change the composition of goblins to copper(or bronze so that steel is the only thing that trully harms them).

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

That didn't last long, huh? Shame, cause binary's cool. Anyway, an important message: I will be changing my names on every username based thing I use to ASCIt on/around 10/1. Consolidating, I guess you could say.

Build a giant dwarven chess set that covers half the map. Bonus points for making it out of metal, or casting the black pieces from obsidian (White would have to be constructed from chalk or marble or somesuch white stone anyway).

Currently making a challenge mod, but it's having some hiccups.  It's amazing how so many things that should be really simple to mod simply are not possible :(

Or you can make a fort out of it! The pawns would be homes and workshops, the towers would be  barracks, the knights, zoos, the bishops meeting areas and sculture gargens, the king and queen would be noble homes. The tile directly in front of the pawns could be a 1-Z deep stockpile. Bonus if you make two distinct forts on two different embark zones, one for each side. Likewise,
