martial stances.
« on: March 15, 2011, 02:46:09 am »

so i just had my first martial stance, and it was friggin awesome...

a novice speardwarf was the first to arrive at my first siege of 3 groups of goblin spearmen...she immediately entered a martial stance and offed/injured several goblins, one of them being pushed just short of 20 spaces back, the rest ran away when they saw the rest of my meager militia (all of 12 other dwarves >.>)

so, what exactly guys, are your best martial stances?

A martial stance is where someone stands officially.

A martial TRANCE, however, is what you misspelled no less than four times.  They're amazing things, when a dwarf is surrounded they get like 5x combat ability, except for striking power.  So they dodge, block with shield, and hit accurately a LOT more.  I've practically made it my combat doctrine, to deploy soldiers solo or near-solo, so that they'll trance immediately and slaughter the lot.  If you're doing it right, then you don't need a big military, you just need an overwhelmed one.

and yeah, it was funny watching the goblins swarm my speardwarf in the river on my map, and just see the river run red in goblin blood

The only martial trance I've had was a berserk woodcutter slaughtering my dwarves... We just barely survived that tantrum spiral, and ever since my walls keep getting engraved with images of Iteb Flarepaddle the Burden of Chapels waving his axe around.

I might see some when the goblins arrive, but I haven't seen any at all in my forts and it makes me wonder if they're extinct...

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

Short version so I don't repost existing thread:

I had an epic military with one squad who had a combined total of like 150+ kills including riding animals and such.  And Reg had just one by pure happenstance.  Then we had a siege, Reg charged full blast into the first group of around 15 speargobbos, went into a martial trance and went f^$*ing ape$#1t on them, getting 8 solo kills and wounding the rest.

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.
