Zombie creeping eye = ultimate training dummy?
« on: March 14, 2011, 05:23:39 pm »

So I've got these zombie creeping eyes that keep wandering into my cage traps at the underworld access point (which I have bottlenecked and trapped).  I wuz wondering... since even the non-zombie versions of these things are very hard to kill, and do almost no damage in combat, could I make a room somewhere to keep these guys, then make a squad of dwarves wielding nothing but wooden training axes, swords, etc., and let them wail away on these things?  Would the wooden training edged weapons not be able to hurt them much?  Also, would the soldiers go nuts from inhaling the zombie miasma?

I would like to see this is an opportunity to train a super-dwarven military...

I tried that once with a flesh ball vs 10 recruits with masterwork steel armor and low quality wooden training weapons all locked in a room together.

The flesh ball won. :(

According to the wiki you can go on for ages with any blunt weapon, but anything with an edge risks killing them...

I'll definitely try it out, but I suppose I'll keep an eye on my boys just to make sure they don't get hurt.

I checked the raws, they don't have any impressive attacks at all.  Anyone with armor should be safe, but just in case keep a hospital stocked in case of cuts.  You'll most likely only see bruising.  These guys are pretty much immune to blunt weapons, you'll wail on it for days without causing life-threatening injuries.  It's a good way to train hammer, or emergency marksdwarves who use their bows like hammers.  I never thought about training weapons, but all of them are blunt attacks so yeah, that should work very well.  Should be good for weapon skills, but not impressive for armor and shield skills.  May do good with wrestling also?

Don't zombies have limited hitpoints?

I think that would be skeletons.

Use them as training dummies for your marksdwarves. You can keep it behind fortifications this way, and gives your marksdwarves much faster training than they could get otherwise, because danger rooms don't train ranged skills.

Zombies and Skeletons do have the interesting bug currently where they completely vanish after a hit or two in combat. No corpse, no dwarf with a "K"ill on their status screen - just a note on the units list: Zombie so-and-so: Deceased.

Occasionally a dwarf does get a kill with a weapon on a skeleton or zombie, but most of the time it just vanishes instantly.

I'm not sure what triggers either event.
