Mechanism Overload

So, I have about 1000 high-quality mechanisms. Does anyone have some ideas as to what I should do with them?

You see, here's how I think this works:
Overseer: Welcome to the military! You need to wear socks! Dorf: Oh, I should get military socks. My socks are civilian socks. Dorf discards socks Dorf: You know, I need a whole lot of gear now. I should get socks... last. Oh, but these steel boots with the white goo on them are nice!

Forge a crapton of menacing spikes (or spears) and put small pit traps everywhere.

Or just sell them.

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

Link every door, floodgate, hatch, grate, bridge, trap, support, and anything else to a single lever.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

I only accept masterworks. Everything else is chucked into the volcano or sent back to the smelters for melting.

Build a clock.
This is a joke right?

There's acctualy a away of making a working clock with pumps, axles, etc. And all those components are made from mechanisms.

Make a dwarven-swiss floor watch.

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

Go one better. Go digital. Use Magma for the numbers, water for the date.

They also sell pretty well in bulk (when the trade caravans drop by, find them by searching for "mech"), so you can at least cart off a few that way.
