So a fisherdwarf and a duck were stuck on a wall
« on: March 13, 2011, 10:05:55 pm »

And I have no idea how they got there, badump-cha. Okay, not that funny of a joke, but seriously, how did they get there? There isn't any access. I just got a 'cancels fishing job, can't find path' message. Now, the duck can fly up there. And it's his duck. He's located on top of the wall, right above the fishing zone below, where I presume he just was. There are no bridges nearby that might have flipped him up there, nothing nearby except a fishery workshop. It's a brook, so nothing came up from below. I checked reports, no fighting, I thought maybe my yak got cantankerous and charged him or something, but nope. So, wtf? Now I have to build a ramp to get him down. At least he has his duck up there to keep him company.

Oh, disappoint, I was expecting a good joke. But I think flying pets can get their owners stuck on top of things.

That has happened to me ridiculously many times, and I have still no idea what's it about.

Yes, mother ****ing walruses stormed in through my well room, fatally gored my expedition leader, and danced off into the frosty tundra to sing happy walrus songs about oysters.

What?! I was about to post about the same weirdness--a bonecarver ended up on a wall, atop the highest tower, with neither any way to get up there, or jump down to it.  Worse, I found him there two years after I completed construction on that tower, so there is no way he was trapped during construction--he would have starved by now. Also no turkey here (I'm still 31.18, until current fort dies) So flying dwarves?  An unforeseen mechanic to be exploited?  Any theories?

I'd assume some wankery is going on around the "dodge to the other side when in a narrow path and someone walks up to me on the same side".

This has been happening for a while now, I've had people climb on top of walls or dodge down ledges and trap themselves(last time this happened ended with a starved mason and a very unhappy mayor).

And I guess how just last night I witnessed a huge fish jump out of the brook it was in and airdrown itself, there's something wrong. Seriously, I was quite mystified by it, whenever someone got close, it jumped on the ground for a second and then rolled back into the brook. But then it jumped 2 tiles away from the water and soon died.

Free meat, hooray! Although at the same time, what the eff.

I had a dwarf die of thirst on top of a wall with no access with a pet (duck or rooster, forget which) sitting on the wall next to his corpse.

I've had this as well, during an ambush I somehow got a peasant on a wall along with an elf on a different section of wall.  I had flying tame animals, namely peacocks, laying about, but none of them were pets.  Sadly, it's pretty much impossibly to check when this happens, as it's so rare and freaky.

I once had a rabbbit from pasture zone jumping over the wall, that surrounds the zone. That must somehow be related to dodging, I believe.

Maybe it's like that bug where you can attack across z-levels, but with dodging.

And Toady talks about ways to keep the mystery in magic. This is magic in my eyes, and plenty mysterious.

If only it wasn't a bug.

You can't get down off a wall, you get down off a duck.

So a dwarf and a duck are both on a wall, which one is closer to falling off?  The duck because the dwarf is a little moron.

So a fisherdwarf and a duck were stuck on a wall. Suddenly, the dwarf noticed a giant eagle flying right at them! The fisherdwarf screamed "DUCK!!!" and the duck looked back at the fisherdwarf and screamed "DWARF!!!"

Just completing the joke  :P

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.
