If you have Industrialcraft, it has mining lasers.

Not good for ship to ship, but jetpacking on to someone else's space station and shooting it full of holes before flying back to your own is fun.

I know, they are indeed quite fun :3 But see bold text. Sadface.

Also, on a scale of one to depressing, how sad is it that I am reduced to searching through the entire modding forum to have any chance of finding a good mod for this?

Minecraft needs more space mods, it seems.

It does, but it will never have enough for fairly obvious reasons. What it really needs, apparently,is turret-type things that one can aim.
That work in SMP and do sci-fi or even modern-tech things and yadda yadda yadda.

...Welp. We may have a slight problem here.

Minecraft needs more space combat mods, it seems.
I stand (very slightly) corrected, then.

We have sci-fi guns.
Just not giant sci-fi cannons. I wish I knew why.
...we don't have little sci-fi flak turrets either, for that matter.

EDIT: Or maybe everyone just hates space opera.

Pointless Gaps are for limiting movement between modules, for strategy and fun!

Anyway, I'm working on a Texture Pack, and on the physical design of modules in Minecraft itself. The Texturepack makes every block a flammable block (stations are constructed of carefully retextured wood/wool) . Also, Redstone Ore acts as Emergency Lighting (right click for a weak light-source). Also, I've almost got the Redstone wiring working for transmitting power, though it's proving a bit difficult. I'm currently setting up two "Power Blocks" in each corner of each custom module (which provide power to connected blocks or redstone; for doors, defenses, and whatever you want) an optional Circuit Breaker button at each access point (for doors), and a Master Power Switch inside each module... and, er, trying to learn Redstone in the process.

EDIT: Actually, I found...a thing.

I was ignoring the constrained firing arcs of lasers... but honestly those turrets would be far superior (if they work in SMP). Heck, they can even be attached to rails and carts, so they can be maneuvered, in addition to being aimed. Great for shooting down fighters, and they also can be used to shoot arrows and TNT, for variety. Not too OP either.

Anyway, I hope it's updated, and that it plays well with Bukkit. Some of his other mods (GlassLight) would be nice too.

Hey, look! Serious Frivolity is educational!

At this point, it looks like we'd be using:
Planes, for vehicles. I'll make custom Planes with custom textures using the API.
Turrets, for station defenses. (Djoslin)
GlassLight, Telescope, and Vertical Redstone. (Non-Essential Extras by Djoslin)
Lasers (Optional), for tractor beam lifts, and laser-based internal defenses.

Retextured bows/arrows will serve for laser guns, and a "flag" can be any old in-game block, so we're set there.

Mods we still need:
- Some kind of World-Edit tool, ideally one that will let us spawn items/entities in an area (automated would be ideal), something that can copy/paste prefab modules from a library of them, and something that will let us reset the stations after each match (so we don't lose them forever).
- Something to tweak the hardness of blocks (IE Wool/Wood, maybe Glass) so that it can't be broken by hand, but can still be burned.

Now, I'm not very good with Minecraft Modding... so, while I'm working on building modules and stuff like that, is there anyone who could test out the mods in question? I'd like to be sure they work in SMP, and play well with one another, before I plan too much around them.

Re: Serious Frivolity: Leapday Livestream? Why not!
« Reply #1094 on: February 29, 2012, 07:30:43 pm »

I figure I ought to use Leapday as an excuse to do things I've never done before, so I configured my webcam to work with the new streaming tool, and I'm thinking I might try it out!

Folks around for a Leapday Livestream of some persuasion? We'd have a few options: I can make some progress on an old series (still got to work on Ecco the Dolphin II, my HELL MODE run through of Phantasy Star IV, and a few others), or do a number of short spots on games like the Cthulu-themed Magicka expansion, any of the Full-Length Amnesia mods, even Skyrim... or get REALLY oldschool and try DOS games like Prince of Persia or Stonekeep.
