Ahh, that explains a lot.

mmm. If item IDs become that much of a problem, I'd just go with IC/BC (or Technic Pack if it works) and PlasmaCraft. Assuming they work together. If not, IC/BC (again, or Technic if it works) and Planes, with Dawn of the Modern World if you can.

Yeah, too many mods!
*Was going to post Minechem but it doesn't do anything practical and 118 elements is a lot of item IDs*

Well Technic is basically IC/BC + Redpower, with EE and Thaum added on to the side along with other things and modmods.
Also, acronym above.

You could wait until Minecraft 1.2
It has about (exactly) 4092 block IDs

We'd probably have to wait yet longer for all the mods to get updated, though.Unless Notch happens to decide that this update is the one to actually add mod support, persay (as in 'they don't break every single update'). Which seems unlikely.

Otherwise, it would be a wonderful, wonderful idea.

EDIT: Since this post is here...
I heard Soli likes goals, so I'll put some potential goals down, in no particular order.
1. Make a space station, of course! It must be entirely above ground, although it can have a 'space' elevator included. It should be made of iron and other metals, as well as glass and plastics if any are around. No stone/wooden space stations :P
2. The space station must be completely airtight, as in 'no holes in the walls, whatsoever'. All doors to the outside must be airlock-doors (ie, two sets of doors).
3. The station must be completely self-sufficient on food, power, and preferably defense.
4. The station must have no fire whatsoever. Yes, no furnaces, no torches, nothing. (Redstone torches are fine.)
5. The station must be capable of defending itself from attacks, as well as having a decent internal security system.
6. (If Planes Mod is installed) The station must have an airtight hanger or other vehicle launch/landing device.
7? Everyone should have space suits! (Jetpacks and Nano-level armor or higher)

To be fair, that might be a slightly more hopeful proposition  :P
Ah, well, close enough. (even though it's not close enough at all)

Okay, one thing that could be neat for Minecraft is a space-based Ship-to-ship combat thing, using Movecraft, that Lasers mod, some other content stuff, and ships with laser-detectors that trigger TNT on various sections of their hulls. Maybe even planes for "fighters" and stuff too. Alternatively, we could do capture the flag or something too, with opposing flags (wool blocks or something) stored in two large Battleships, which we'd have to fly fighters into, grab the flag, and return. Low Gravity would be cool, but barring that we could also do it in high-orbit above a planet, to handwave the fact that there's still gravity.

In either case, install the appropriate mods, and give each team a copy of the same basic ship "frame" which they could customize, and a hanger with some fighters in it. We'd need to prep the ship frames first, and probably want to save a backup for the map and submit it.

Thoughts? Suggestions to make this happen?

This could certainly be many kinds of win, but the laser detection thing sounds quite awkward. PlasmaCraft had some nice guns on it, and I'd be surprised if I couldn't find a nice mod for some sci-fi ship guns somewhere.  I am looking right now, in fact.

EDIT: While not so scifi, this here Cannon Mod is still a thing. It also has radar and force-fields, both very useful things.

EDIT EDIT: It is entirely possible there is no mod for sci-fi block-based weapons. Le sigh! I will continue the search, though. In the meantime, SDK gun mod could work. :P

EDITEDITEDIT: Modifiable guns are also a thing and may be somewhat sci-fi if need be. Still no ship artillery though. D:

EDIT4 Sci fi weapons, huzzah! But no blocks.
EDIT5: Robots! And other stuff. Because why not, I'm on a roll.
EDIT6:That Horizontal Remover would work...maybe...
FAKEDIT: I actually ran out of topics. Holy fudge. There is indeed no such block mod.

Otherwise, both of those options sound quite reasonable. Although, right now, the second one seems more likely, since we have no giant cannons available and our only option is to wire MILES to TNT to make do with a mod meant for land clearing :P

Could Technic Pack be used to make plane and ammo spawners? Like, somehow make the parts and assemble them or duplicate the planes and ammo on a regular basis so you won't run out but you won't be able to use all the stuff immediately. Such manufacturing facilities could also be used to get materials to patch up the ship.

Sorry, a lot of my goal ideas are competitive, and tend to be pretty big in scale. Just for consideration, here's some sort of concept; a ship-to-ship Capture The Flag game using Movecraft, Planes, Lasers, and Space:

You'd have a limited map (a 240 block cube in the example), 1 Capital Ship with a flag (and an interior which each team can customize) as well as 2 smaller Cruisers. Each ship can be maneuvered around the field, and have Red Laser weapons capable of burning players and fighters, but always face the same direction; Cruisers fire lasers North/South, while Capital Ships have an array of West/East lasers, and two big North/South Lasers. The Capital Ship also has a hangar with fighters inside, which can be used to transport players to the opposing ships hangar in order to get the flag, and to shoot down enemy fighters (but not significantly damage the ship). The map is divided diagonally by an asteroid belt, which each Capital Ship (and possible the Cruisers as well) cannot cross, but fighters can.

Optionally, each major part of the ship (the bridge, the weapons batteries, and each significant piece of hull) have a single point that detects lasers. If hit by a big ship's laser, it will trigger TNT, which will blow a hole in that area, and/or render that system inoperable.

-snip-
One could also make an alternate goal: destroying all enemy ships. We don't need that optional bit, we have block-destroying lasers! Heck, using some of the other lasers ( tractor beams, anyone?) could be highly entertaining. I can just imagine tractoring asteroids onto your own ship to use as a defense, or pulling off pieces of the enemy ship block by block.

EDIT: Of course, we may wish to mod the lasers so they go farther. After all, this is SPACE! And in space, light isn't stopped by anything. But light diffracts, so technically they don't have infinite range. 10 meters is definitely far too short for ship artillery, though.

Movecraft hasn't been updated in a while, and you'd need to make all the mods work with Tekkit (which I don't know how that works in the first place, just that it does)

And we'd need a space map.

Zeppelin isn't MP yet, is it? if it is that'd be sweet (assuming it works). If it doesn't, we has problem. Of course, we can always just have the ships be stationary, but that's usually boring.  :-\

Space maps can be developed. Or found.
