Westerns
« on: March 13, 2011, 04:33:51 pm »

I need them. Good western novels, movies, etc. If its a western, I want to read/watch it right now.

Does anyone know any good ones?

The novels by Zane Gray are traditional.  I've read only one, but I hear that there's rather a lot of them to choose from.

Yes. This.

Shane, of course. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Lonesome Dove. Dead Man.

The Dollars Trilogy, especially The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
You forgot the best Sergio Leone western: Once Upon a Time in the West. Unforgettable characters, great actors, one of the best Morricone soundtracks. Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale. It's the best western out there, and I'll boil with an udying hate for you and your offspring till the fifth generation, if you dare thinking otherwise.

Anyway, mister clockout1, you might want to leave it for after you've seen the rest of Leone films(those that Ein linked to), as one of it's strengths is a somewhat revisionist approach to the romantic-style westerns.

And when you're done with that, watch Unforgiven, which is practically built around that revisionist idea, and extremally well too. Starring and directed by Clint Eastwood, no less.

I second Unforgiven, and also recommend Tombstone.

Unforgiven has a brilliant approach to violence. I think it stands out not only as a great western, but a great action film because of that.

And I can't believe I forgot this, but for books. Blood Meridian. It's a hyper violent almost surrealistic apocalypse. Some of the finest prose ever written too.

Also, if you're cool with space westerns: Firefly, Trigun, Outlaw Star, and Cowboy Bebop.

I don't know how it rates in comparison, but I enjoyed True Grit.

That's what makes it great.

My Name is Nobody

Currently on instant play in Netflix, which surprised me.  It's also Henry Fonda's last western.

Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.
