Diplomatic games?
« on: March 13, 2011, 03:31:36 pm »

I'm currently looking for a (preferably 4x/total war style) game with a strong empthasis on diplomacy and intrigue.  Good graphics are a bonus, but far from essential.  Any ideas?

EDIT: preferably not containing space travel.

On intrigue - The guild, the guild 2. (neither is truly a 4x, but you should try them nonetheless)

On diplomacy - EU series, Crusader Kings.

I can't think of a reason to list Hearts of Iron 3 here. There is no effective diplomacy in HoI series.

Yeah, HoI series has minimal diplomacy.
Personally, I'd recommend Diplomacy.

Supreme Ruler Cold War is coming out and looks like it might fit the bill. Supreme Ruler 2020 was good but labor intensive.

Alpha Centauri?
It's not on Earth but it doesn't have any space travel. The factions are really varied and great to play against.
Expansion wasn't too crash hot though.  :-[

Just a great game all round really.

As much as Alpha Centauri is a masterpiece, I wouldn't really consider it good when it comes to diplomacy. While factions are actually justified in doing it, they tend to declare war relatively randomly and the diplomacy system is the worst part of the game, even if decent. Pretty much the same flaws in the diplomacy as most of the civ series.

Or at least it was the best I played.

Hidden Agenda. Not exactly a 4x/TW game, but very very heavy on the diplomacy and intrigue. It's practically a Nicuragua simulator.

It's not like you can attack everything on sight. I consider it diplomacy when you build alliance blocks, spy on everyone and start forming other peoples' opinion by false propaganda :D

Only to kill them all afterwards...

Shadow President/Superpower/Superpower 2 weren't so much horrible as they were lessons in patience. Your actions had slow or imperceptible effect leading you to sometimes feel like you weren't actually in control of anything. It was/is kind of accurate since running a nation is more akin to steering a glacier than a car.

Yeah, but I liked it eventually, and people still play it online.
