My engraver engraved a monkey in my Mayor's quarters. I think he was trying to say something.

That he looks like G. W. Bush?

I just realized two things. 1. For the Win and F___ the World have the same initials. 2. They have the same meaning in Dwarf Fortress.

Now, you are being an asshole to monkeys. And possibly the mayor, too.*

*yo, this is not serious nor an insult to you.

I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

ll the engravings in my fort seem to be of elves killing/mutilating dwarves.
Ive never had a battle with the elves, it looks like the engravings refer to old battles in history, but they are OBSESSED with engraving elves in victorious poses over dwarves. (The artwork relates to the tearing of Urist McFailure's left ear by Elfy Treemolester etc etc...)
No wonder all my dorfs are tantruming.
You got it all wrong. That's obviously motivational engravings. There must be a slogans there somewhere, like "Defend your burrow against treehuggers- sign up for militia today!" or "Defend our nation - join the Dwarven Army!"

Anyway, they seem to be working. You will know what to do with next elven caravan now. The time for vengeance is now!

An excerpt from On the origins of dwarfs.

"Stone detailing/Engraving: Engravers are an odd bunch, perhaps the most innately subversive group in any dwarven fortress. During times of relative calm they enjoy carving things like triangles and mushrooms, perhaps in an attempt to create some sort of weaponized boredom. However, in troubled times they delight in covering every flat surface in an endless array of disturbing images; it's not uncommon for dwarven bedrooms to be adorned with mosaics of the inhabitant’s loved ones being gored by elephants or trampled by goats. Engravers are often described by their peers as “arseholes”."

My masons had once mad a statue of Reg Oilgates, who had an issue with bleeding constantly though she was unwounded and disease-free - and for no apparent reason, considering she was in no way a venerable, honorable, or significant dorf.

Also, I had placed an artifact cabinet inside my noble's room. Directly across the room was engraved upon the wall the visage of that exact cabinet.
I can't quite understand how the redundancy there could be pleasing.

My guess is that the engraver wanted to screw with him.

Recently, I had my Duke's tomb engraved in order to bring it up to his required high standards.  The engraver proceeded to make engravings of the duke surrounded by worms in the tomb.  I thought this quite appropriate, and telling of what the engraver must think about the duke.

This is a masterful engraving of a tunnel entrance.  It is decorated with splatters of goblin blood.  The dwarves are laughing.

No, that would just be Toady One being the dick.  One of the possible things for dwarves to create artwork of is another dwarf's greatest fears.  Don't ask me why he programmed it that way, but it's a pretty interesting feature.

It's even better when it's something funny, like bees, or giant cave spiders.

So does looking at such an engraving actually give that particular dwarf unhappy thoughts?

It's not just the engravers, it's the whole stone carving guild.  Metalworkers aren't immune either.  Check out your statues.  I had a metalworker who would only crank out statues of antelope fiends and roaches.  They became fun things to decorate the chambers of nobles I hated, though.  Just a good reminder of what I'd toss them to if they got out of line.

It beats my metalworker who spends his days making gold statues of himself...

Socks inspire the same sort of emotions in dwarfs that Helen of Troy inspired in the Achaean Greeks. Although it is said that Helen's face launched a thousand ships, socks have surely launched a million ultimately-fatal Store Owned Item tasks.

The engravers in Headshoots had engraved images of themselves engraving.

A man may fish with the worm that hath eat of a king, and eat of the fish that hath fed of that worm.
