floor expansion
« on: November 19, 2007, 02:03:00 am »

i can expand a floor into mid air infinitely with no walling, no suports, and much larger than 7x7 even with heavy flooring on top of that with walls

as such its possible to construct a huge complex standing alone say 20x20 into the sky with little to it besides a few humble walls floors and stairs with little chance of it falling internally

although constructed walls stairs and floors can be destroyed by oncomming invaders, tantruming dwarves, and titans/colossus

it is still a stand along building with no internal support

it is effective to build a 10x17 floor set out from the mountain expanding your buildings but should be supported from below by typical supports or walls

This is a consequence of adding the Z axis. When Toady added the vertical building, he also removed the old code for cave-ins (not sure if he gave a reason). I'm sure that a more realistic cave-in system will be made later, but for now, it is the way it is.

It's not exactly a bug, since it's something Toady did deliberately, as (I assume) a stop-gap measure.

ah.. i see
i had intentionally not experimented with a 7x7 inside mountain to see if it would collapse

atleast now i know its possible to just dig out everything!!
providing i dont dig under something, then cut it off from the rest of the mountain by digging channels to the bottom

wont stop me though from building the fabled ziggurat just for fun

The cavein code was removed, but a part of the new one exists - be wary of collapsing stuff if the falling stone hits unsupported floor. Even a single soil floor tile can blast through several levels, if there's nothing but floors in the way, and if the unsupported areas are large, it may well take the whole floor down with it. I'm not sure if a full layer of stone gives enough protection, but I would assume it also has its limits.

At least you can still do great cave-in traps.  In fact, it seems far more reliable and lethal than the old system.  At my entrance is an 8x9 section of floors suspended only by 4 columns hooked up to a lever.  In my testing, it effectively killed any dwarf under it when it was activated.

Of course, they're also a heck of alot harder to reset.
