Azure Dreams (sp?)

Old playstation game. 'breeding' goes in the way of combining monsters.

Agricultural Simulator 2011?

Oh man, not these things again. I remember seeing an old PC farm simulator series that, for some reason, became incredibly popular. Funny seeing another one, it's like a whole genre.

Demikids for the GBA is awesome :)

In other news Demikids is the best example of this game style from the SMT series. The gameplay is a little shallow compared to other SMT games, but I really enjoyed the fact that one of the best elements from the series (demon capturing/splicing/raising, although there is little "raising" to be done, levels are irrelevant and you get new, stronger demons very quickly) was blown up into the size of a full video game. It's like SMT's answer to Pokemon.

I liked to consider Black and White a farming game.

I farmed tree's.

Watered them, grew them up, moved them into big forests that allowed them to grow better.

Then when they were big enough, id harvest them, and feed them to my people.

The only reason i played Black and White, was to grow tree's and get endless wood.

Added the latest entries and also organised the list a bit. It's still messy, and not in any alphabetical order or anything, but it now has a colour-coded legend for quick reference. I'm sure it's incomplete and probably has some errors, but I'll trust people to point them out. ;P

Added some horse racing games too, as they're pretty similar to Chocobo Stallion in breeding and stat-tracking your animals.

Oh, and I decided that games that have sidequests that fit the genre, but are not the main focus, I've put into an 'Honourable Mentions' category instead. The most recent suggestion of Black & White fits there for its creature raising/battling, but I don't agree it has anything to do with farming beyond being able to water trees and fields.

As always, thanks for the help!

Presumably, we all know DF exists and where to find it. ;)

Crusader Kings!

You start with a European King/Duke/Count during the time of the Crusades, then breed with various people to get children, one of whom takes over when your starting character dies, and you variously raise and breed individuals to inherit the throne, rule vassal provinces, and administer diplomacy, finances, skullduggery, and mashall the army!

Considering the actions of most players (killing serfs, killing opposing rulers, killing etc), I think this counts as monster breeding and raising.   :P

Because it is a game that features Ranching, farming, and breeding but doesn't focus them like a game that is based upon them would be.

Nor does Dwarf Fortress do enough in those areas to elevate it to be considered as a game with Farming, Ranching, Breeding sim on the side.

The only reason I put Princess Maker in is because of how it inspired several Breeding/Ranching games itself to the point where the gameplay is not only similar but in many ways evolved in Princess Maker (If very complex)

Which I HOPE the list, that I havn't looked at again before making this post... Seperates "Games with junk" and "Games of junk".

I don't see what farming has to do with ranching. :/

Personally, I'd drop it and replace it with "raising". That's one of the best parts of a decent ranching game, and is the main focus of Princess Maker (and the method through which it influenced so many others). It was also the major component of games like Monster rancher.

I'd have: Racing, Battling, Collecting, Breeding, Raising, with perhaps an Honourable Mention category for games that sort of pay lip-service to one of these mechanics.
So
Pokemon: Ba C(HM: Br)
Digimon: Ba Br Rs (HM: C)
Monster Rancher: Rs Ba C Br

Well, I sorta assume raising is the one mechanic everything on the list shares by virtue of the genre.

About ranching, Wikipedia says:
Quote
If the ranch includes arable or irrigated land, the ranch may also engage in a limited amount of farming, raising crops for feeding the animals, such as hay and feed grains.

But in relation to this thread, one of the original games on the list was Shepherd's Crossing, which specifically combines farming and animal breeding/battling aspects, so from there I decided to mention farming elements in similar games as it was something I was attracted to in the genre.

Brotip: DQM and DWM are the same thing. Just it was translated as warriors instead of quest at first, but they gave that up soon enough.

I feed them to the Creature. Especially if he decided to demonstrate his mastery of the Fireball you've been trying to teach him for the past hour right there in your carefully tended forest.

Note: Creatures don't like trees. Especially if he decided to demonstrate his mastery of the Fireball you've been trying to teach him for the past hour right there in your carefully tended forest.
