How do I get Fallout 1 to run on my system?
« on: March 11, 2011, 07:35:11 am »

I just got Fallout 1. I'm using Windows 7, 64 bit. Everything goes alright, but a lot of the screens are rainbow coloured and distorted for some reason. Any clue as to why this is happening?

Did you run in compatibility mode?

Did you run in compatibility mode?
At first, no. It made the game lock up pretty fast. After that, I ran it in Windows XP Service Pack 2 mode. It cleared the crashes but some rainbow screens remain.

I couldn't get Fallout 1 to work on my XP machine. If it's possible, try it on a 98 machine/mode, as I got mine to work on an old 98 machine I had lying around.

Is there a patch for Fallout at all? A patch that will make it run on newer systems?

If there is, it'll likely be fan-made. Check out The Vault (fallout wiki), they'll most likely have info on it.

Damn, wish I could remember how I was playing Fallout on the same OS a few months ago. I vaguely recall the problems you mentioned, but I don't think the solution was too difficult to find.

All I can suggest is to try setting your desktop to 16-bit colour. There's a way to do this, too... ugh, why didn't I save these links? Wait, I think I'm confusing this with 24-bit. I distinctly recall that Win7 has trouble with one of these modes, so if you can't do one, try the other!

Sorry. I'll hunt around a little bit and post back if I remember or figure out anything.

Edit: This post sounds promising. http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/8870-fallout-2-a.html#post109168

We're talking about a 1997 release game for DOS/Windows with the following requirements?

Pentium 90 MHz, 32 MB RAM, 2x CD-ROM, SVGA, SoundBlaster-compatible sound card.

Try DOSBox assuming you can install the DOS version and not the Win 95 version.

I definatly don't have the Dos version. Dosbox dosen't run it.

Is there Windows XP-box anywhere?
