Dwarves are dying from thirst, aren't working..
« on: March 11, 2011, 07:22:00 am »

Hi,
Today i started a new fort playing the most recent version (0.31.21).
I embarked near the ocean. Soon my dwarves drank all the alcohol and became thirsty. I did not now that my murky pools are all salt water so er.. my first expedition died from thirst :P
I reclaimed the land and built a well on one of the pools and dwarves where using it just fine (i think)
But right now they are all thirsty again and dying! Also they refuse to work.. my brewers arent interested in making ale, woodcutters arent chopping any trees etc..
What happened? Are my dwarves too sad with recent loss or is this some reclaim bug im having?

Maybe you should drain some of the pools and then see if they're still salt water when it rains again.

Or you could make a resavoir out of man-made blocks and screw pumps. I'm pretty sure dwarven screw pumps purify water.

Well, first of all, make sure you have the right labours assigned to your dwarves. For brewing, also make sure you have empty barrels or waterproof large pots on hand, as well as a brewable plant ( like a plump helmet ). If all those steps are met, then a dwarf SHOULD eventually make some booze at your still. If they're completely and absolutely refusing to work, it might be because they have no path to their workplace ( make sure no doors are locked, no drawbridges are up, no pits are present, etc )

Yeah, in the future you probably shouldn't strike the earth quite so hard

You mean, this ver removes the trick where you coud just build well on saltwater source to get drinking water?
Also, right now i think im encountering something strange..
I cant trade items from my stockpile. My broker died so maybe thats the thing, but i cant even move items to the depot.. or im missing something, i havent played df for some months..

As for labours, all is set also i have plenty of barrels and plump helmets. Its not just the brewers that stopped working, it a whole goddamn fort!  >:(

EDIT:
Almost half of my fort died and now they are drinking from the well again but still refuse to work

Are you getting any announcements after you place the job? Are you using a job manager, and are they alive? Could you have forbid or dumped the materials the workshops are made from(use t to check)?

Can the dwarves path to what you want them to drink/haul and so on?

Also, if you need booze fast, disable all jobs on your brewer except brewing. Especially hauling. And pray that your barrels haven't been filled with food, or are forbidden.

Items arent forbiden and everything is accessible.
I noticed that in alert i constantly get a message that my woodworker canceled giving food to an animal because it wasnt accesible. But i have no idea which animal is this. This message show like a hundred times already.

EDIT:
About the hauling.. its not done either. There are plenty of items waiting to be moved to corresponding stockpiles (for example dead bodies of their fellow dwarves :P).
But the dwarves doesnt care..

Are you using j->m to set up jobs? Without a living, working job manager that won't work and you have to use q. How happy are your dwarves? Are you getting any tantrums?

Were they all on breaks from drinking water too long?

So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.
