Well technically U-235 becomes U-236 shortly before the fission. But then it's not exactly fuel, but rather a.. uhmm, what do ya call it again? Ah yeah, a temporary state.

Or a permanent one, depending on the velocity of the neutron.

Why not, actually, in a complete meltdown of the reactor scenario, why couldn't be a critical mass buildup?
(Not pretending that there could be one, just interested on what are the mechanism avoiding that.)

Its really simple: critical mass requires a given mass, shape and density of the right isotope. Since the fuel used in the plant has mixed isotopes, it is impossible to achieve that density with any mass and shape without an impossible to achieve amount of compression.

Most nuclear bombs that have much higher ratio' of the right isotope can only reach critical mass under a carefully controlled pressure way created by a sphere of high explosives.

Looking at those before and after maps just makes me sympathize with the residents of those areas a ton. The devastation is equivalent to if my town was literally washed off the map (and it's pretty darn close to sea level too, so an equally powerful tsunami would probably hit a little further). Doesn't help that my house is planted on the front lines either in those regards (cost of convenience being next to the beach).

As for the asshats that made those racist posts, I am equally furious but I'm just going to ignore it (especially since I just got back from church, and I don't want to disturb my peace). Not to be all "Doomsday is here, repent now!", but it very well looks like the world is ready to detonate all sorts of crap, and Japan was a very visible warning it gave off (there may have been more, though less noticeable). I have to wonder, if the end is really so damn close, why continue to be like that? Whether Heaven and Hell exists or not doesn't matter, and would be made irrelevant anyway when arguing with such people anyway; but wouldn't it help to at least show some sympathies to have a peace of mind in case an end DOES come?

The lack of such common sense is what disturbs me the most in such matters.

Magnitude 8-8.9 earthquakes happen around once a year.  The only thing that made this a big deal was its being up in Japan's business.

The end is not nigh.

For a good deal of the population hit the hardest there (and survived), it probably is. Or at least came and went.

Would this be a good time to point out that Australia is very geoactively stable, and earth quakes, even tiny ones, would be a rare and freakish event.

Eh, you'll find ignorant jerks who don't understand anything about the world around them other than a fanatical belief that they can never be wrong anywhere. These just have a historical event to use as an anchor for their stupid. Trust me, this sort of ridiculousness could happen anywhere, Peral Harbor is simply the reason it happened in the USA.

Anyway, I don't think we have much to worry about when it comes to the fission reactors, just sensationalist media being sesationalist again. Japan will be able to bounce back from this, I'm sure.

Someone referred to them as krauts. It's alright people, they all are just dumb as a brick. That got thrown through a window. And smashed repeatedly on the ground.
