left shoe, right shoe... or not?
« on: March 10, 2011, 07:30:59 pm »

I've noticed that footwear no longer has "left" and "right" as part of the description. Is this normal with the new version? Also on a related note, let's assume you have a copper low boot and an iron low boot: how do you get a single dwarf to equip both of them?

My Dwarves (v 31.21) have left and right shoes. ???

Edit:  My mistake.  They have them on their left and right feet.   :-[

Mine, .19 and .18, never have.

EDIT: Gauntlets have always been L/R though.

i guess footwear in the medieval ages wasnt ergonomically built to fit either the left or right foot, while when it comes to handwear, having the thumb on the wrong side would matter a bit more

My understanding was this was an intentional change to make equipping dwarves easier. Why it wasn't applied to gloves, though, I couldn't say. I'd kill for gloves to just turn into a pair, for example.

Then what happens when a dwarf gets his hand lopped off?

I *think* shoes might become *left* or *right* depending on which foot they're worn - that is to say, footwear exists in a quantum state, and it is only when you try and wear it does it conform to a specific footed-ness.

Wouldn't be the first time dwarves built something quantum...

Though maybe that's the issue. The concept is just too simple for the dwarven mind to grasp!

Actually the whole concept of shoes for a specific foot is pretty new one. If the Wikipedia entry is to be believed "Until around 1800, shoes were made without differentiation for the left or right foot.".

Interestingly, Armok's name actually originates from arm_ok, a variable in one of Toady's earlier games that kept track of how many of your arms weren't missing.

Shoes used to be made of cloth or leather, both of which would conform to the shape of the foot.  New leather shoes were, from my understanding, notoriously uncomfortable until they had stretched to fit the footedness of the foot it was worn on.

Hence "Breaking in" a new pair of shoes.

Napoleon made his servants wear his shoes until they had been broken in.

Fun fact!

Lucky his servants had the same shoe size.
