Man, I remember watching that video back when it was first released. I remember that I needed another pair of pants after watching it.
Now that they're doing signups for the closed beta, all of my pants are dirty.
Anyway, here is my ref link, but I think anyone here who was going to sign up already has, so...
Actually, I think this signup method makes a whole lot of sense. It gives players an incentive to get others into the game, leading to more and more people who know about it, leading to more and more people who'll buy it upon release, leading to more people playing on release, meaning more people buying things from their ingame store.
The only flaw in it is that, theoretically, the whole community for the game gets to be in on the beta, so then it'd be pretty much just an initial release.

Just learned that Hawken is free to play, with an ingame item store.

As amazing as that looks, I'm 100% certain that you won't get nearly that gorgeous of gameplay unless you're using their high-powered development rig.

I also question how much this will be "mech combat" or "large-scale HALO deathmatch".  Always loved mechwarrior for how it's really mechs.  You get damage parts and weight ranges and overheat and all the delicious mechanical parts.  Then you get some that are generic HALO/Quake/UnrealTournament except you're made of metal.

Originally this was a day 1 play for me. But as more information about is has come out...the F2P, the arena-style nature of it, micro-transactions, I'll be waiting for people to tell me it's amazing before I get into it. Most of my fascination with it came from the visuals, and gameplay hasn't really captured my imagination even though I've watched tons of videos by now.

Same here.  I only watched the one teaser and I'm a bit unimpressed.  Looks pretty, sure, but I'll never run it looking that nice, and chances are I won't run it at all because games that look that good usually don't have a "minimalistic graphics" option.  The gameplay itself looks ok from the teaser.  Jumping around and shooting.  But I already played Tribes when it came out a decade ago!

Microtransactions in this sort of game sound terrible.  The sort of terrible that lets you buy armor and guns.  I haven't looked at the shop but please tell me if I'm wrong there.
