It is on my personal list of things I'd like to see. Unfortunately on my list of things I do not want to see are drug abuse, stoned out dwarves and huge worldgen wars over opium growing regions. It has also been discussed elsewhere at length; they all slide toward these topics due to what I call the Urist Effect; any suggestion to Dwarf Fortress will be turned by the community into a means to use magma.

Opium wars sound fun...

Better than elves thinking humans look funny as a reason.

I agree but it whould be funny to have a Dwarf Dope War mode lol.

I was only thinking from a point of view of fantasy and not a drug thing
I don't drink don't smoke and don't take drugs but I think is fun as I seen it in
fantasy books or games.

LOTR dwarves actually smoke "pipe weed"  just what pipe weed is is not really gone into, but it was developed by hobbits according to some of Tolkein's work, and considering Hobbit proclivities (eating all the time, very mellow) I think it was more likely marijuana than tobacco.

Meanwhile, smoking of anything was actually developed not by Europeans, but by Americans.  It wasn't something Europeans thought to do until after interacting with the Americas, which was also where tobacco came from.  So if DF models a mideval world based roughly on mideval Europe smoking would not be included.

Since when has it been based on Europe... o_O

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

Also, it was only tobacco that the America's were first to.

In LOTR dwarfs smoke tabaco with pipes , so do these dwarfs should too while they are not working.

First rule of suggestions: Just because LOTR did it, does not mean, in any way shape of form, that DF should do it. Dwarf fortress is not lord of the rings, nor does it extend from lord of the rings, nor does it inherit from lord of the rings. They are two separate entity, and one can do what the other is not. We do not need to make sure every piece of fiction conforms to Tolkeins backyard. And this goes for just about everybody! Let developers have freedom in what they do, and not limit them to the series of a guy who died a while ago, therefore is unlikely to get expanded. If somebody wants to remake the LOTR universe exactly, then it is their loss.

Second rule is something about modding, but it isn't relevant here.

I think it would be interesting to have smoking ingame, yet I don't know if it seems 'dwarfy'. I don't know, my view of dwarfy might differ from yours, but for me this seems like a human thing.

Well must be that i'm reading the book and not long ago I read a part about how much Gimli likes smoking and pipin had to give a pipe that he had to gimli.

I understand about these rules or ideas just as DF to me is so much like LOTR.

There's no model for consummable crafts...

That could solve a lot.  Creatures eat this for fun.(add syndromes for added fun).

And a tag for 'eating this releases smoke' (miasma?)

Put it in, I say.

Hobbits were crafty enough to find a use for a plant that elves thought to be almost useless. Put it in just to spite the pointy-ears!

Third rule could be "There's a dev entry for it."?

I dunno, smoking does involve fire. And dwarves surely would not light their smokes with itty-bitty little matches. They'd use a whole log.

As said, LOTR is not a bible for all fantasy games.

Second, cigs cause smoke, smoke causes lag. Even a little bit of mist coming from a waterfall causes a significant lag source. Having twenty dwarves on a smoke break at once would kill a computer.

Third this seems like another useless aesthetic that serves no purpose other then a petty happy thought and yet another thing to take up dwarves time.

Concerning Opium wars? No, it's in bad taste, and not everybody supports such a brutish suggestion just because 'real life does it'.
