It's not "bad if you compare", it's just very different. Not a "roam around with your own character and a group, exploring the world, pausing game to rethink your group tactics and helping various sides", more like "play parts of life of a dude the Bioware tossed to us".

There was no actual roaming, it was just different stages that you could return to. I'd rather have a much more personal story in one city than what I had in DAO. Pausing and rethinking group tactics is intact, just take hard or whatever might think, for the sake of having you think, in spite of a warning voice, that comes everynight, and repeats, how it yells in my head "Don't you know, you fool, ain't got no chance to win, why not use your mentality, wake up to reality". And each time I do, just the thought of it makes me stop just before I begin, 'cause I play this only for the story. To me RPG doesn't define combat. It defines character development and getting involved into the story.

By "roaming" I meant that there's much less places to explore in the second game.

To that I must agree, though I am not quite the explorer. One city idea would have been ok, if there was more places to it.

Yeah, I think most people were disappointed when they realized that the game is entirely centered around Kirkwall. It's not really bad, and it's pretty Neverwinter Nights style but it's just not what you expect after journeying across all of Ferelden in DA:O.

The journeying through Ferelden idea isn't really a distinguishing feature in DAO, that it should be repeated in whole series. One interesting city is as good as one interesting country, sadly, the city being not quite as interesting as it could have been.

Does anyone know if DA2 allows for the same level of elaborate user-made mods, content and scenarios that DAO did?

Another reason I really dont like it is the fact that it was obviously cut short.
It was advertised as spanning over a decade, while the game itself was only 6 years or so, which means that the last quarter of the game was cut out for DLC.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. But sometimes you have pictures with words in them :

I don't get all the bile thrown on Bioware. It might not be your cup of tea, but it has the best storytelling in gaming in years..

That's like saying I had the best shit in shitting in a toilet that anyone has ever had in years.

It might be true, but it's still a shit.

There comes a time when you must take off the soft, furry slippers of a boy and put on the shoes of a man.
Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

I guess it doesn't matter for people who click away all dialogue. Else I don't see the need for that verbal diarrhea.

PS: I played and enjoyed the Witcher, but the characters lost a couple of dimensions going from book to game.

I don't think DA2 storytelling is that great. It's quite simple and doesn't have a lot of options, as well as lore and backstory. No more libraries with many books, no more complicated dialogues with every beggar... It's in the same bowl as Mass Effect in its storytelling/action movie ratio, but Mass Effect at least has many side missions, exploration elements and quite a big "codex" as well as ability to read tons of cool conversations all over the place. But oh well, I didn't come to rant, I just want to say that it's definitely not the best.

Yeah, I find it in almost any book->game transition, I liked books more, but still it has quite good story :).

Well, quality over quantity for me. Though DA2 still has a decent enough codex filled with diverse topics. Nevertheless 'my' story (the path I followed in the game), was quite high quality and immersed me more into the world then the Witcher ever did. More than any game the last (10?) years, I felt the world coming alive. Elder Scrolls/Gothic games were an empty playground, and the Witcher fell short of it's potential.

The flavour texts upon finding certain items are miles ahead of other games I played the last years. I can't even recall if the Witcher had a codex, which tells me enough. And Oblivions books we're mostly stale, though better then the ingame story.
