DSCV King's Holly. Chapter 2.
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:28:49 pm »

This is the narrative of the Deep Space Colony Vessel "King's Holly"  A prototype ship designed to colonize the planet designated RCW 129, planetary body #4 at any cost.  The purpose of this thread is to have fun while improving my descriptive writing and english skills.

Themes.
Real Emotion.
Science Fiction.
Mystery.

Spoiler: PlayerList (click to show/hide)
Rules are improv, if you attempt to fix a broken pipe, it will happen.  If you attempt to fix a broken pipe with just your hands, it will happen, at the price of your hands.  The one golden rule of improv is: "No blocking."  If Player A says "I'm going to jump out into space without a helmet to save the ship!"  Player B can't say "No, that's dumb!"  Actions and facts cannot be taken away once they're part of the game.

Prolog.
Originally discovered in 1992, the RCW 129 star was deemed to have no habitable planetary bodies.  'Just like every other solar system' the scientific community grumbled.  However, the revision of the starmap in 2022 to include "Planetary Body #4" was hardly met with a standing ovation.  The reason was simple: we couldn't even make the distance to Titan and back and survive the tale.  What use was this lush garden - so far out into the heavens - that the fastest inventions.  The greatest works of man, still took thousands of years to reach?

The year is now 2033.  A private company is claiming to have that ship, to get to that planet within a man's lifetime.  You have volunteered and were selected because of your physical health and intelligence.  Waking up from cryostasis, you remember the first condition of volunteering for this mission.  "Cryosleep really fucks with your memory."  You remember some instructor telling you.  Not able to even remember the layout of the ship, you wake to find yourself in a cold room.  It's going to take some getting used to, but you're going to have to remember how to run this ship.

Chapter 1: Remembrance.

Nine people slowly emerged from cryosleep.
"Please keep your resperators in your mouths."
A kind and concerned voice instructed from the center of the room, a tenth person.  This struck you as odd - no, impossible - considering there are only 9 cryo pods.  Her short brown hair, orange one piece suit and polished black boots without fault.  You can't remember who she is.
"As you may or may not remember" she continues "You are onboard the DSCV King's Holly, after the schedualed 200 year cryo sleep.  I am here to answer any questions regarding the operation, layout or history of this ship."  She bows saying this.  "If anyone feels nauseous, please pop your ears to adjust to the pressure difference from the cryopod."
Eight other people women, men and even adolescents emerge from cryosleep; you cant recall a single face.  You feel relieved that you're not alone, as they look around in a similar confused fashion.

Taking a closer examination of the room, there are 9 cryopods lined up along the wall.  The left wall contains a partially opaque and bubbling tank of liquid,  the far wall contains a wall console with displayed information and the center of the room contains the woman and a rounded desk, presumably with console displays for the cryopods.  You are also happy that you remember the basic layout of the next couple of rooms.

The security camera on the right side of the room unnerves you with it's panning swivel and blinking red light.

((Actions are to be bolded with a prefrence to the longer, thought out actions, (especially those that include the main characters inner thoughts.)))

((Sit up. Question the lady as to who she is and where we are.))

You raise yourself from the cryobed, the monitor ticking to the beat of your heart stops abruptly as you level your gaze to the feminine figure across the room.  Others begin to rouse themselves.  They can wait, questioning this person comes first.

"Whve re uuu, whrv re vee?"  you surprise yourself trying to speak through the resperator.  You think about removing it to speak but the lady introduces herself before you can give it a second though.
She stifles a laugh by cupping a hand over her mouth, "I am the ship's AI system,  "AI" is fine.  You may contact me from anywhere onboard this ship...  We are currently at galactic coordinates 351.90°, 12.70°."  She stops to look upon everyones confused faces and frowns.  Looking concerned she explains in a slow voice like talking to a child.  "At anyrate, we're a few hours from our destination, we are currently decelerating.  Our current speed is 978km per second and dropping.  There is a minor error in the Aft Port Landing strut which will need to be repaired before landing sequence can be initiated.  I am also unable to retrieve sensor data from the Starboard Sensor Array."  Stopping her slow explanation she smiles exuberantly and finishes "No other errors detected, questions?"
"Hve re uuuu eing roeted?" A middleaged man asks faintly at the other end of the room.
"Mmm, I don't want to answer - sorry!"  She chides.

Ugh. We can't understand a thing that's being said with these things in our mouths.

Ask the AI if we may remove the respirators yet

(Going to assume I can take control of one of the other 8 people here, if not then disregard, also my character is female, asian.)
Sit up in the pod, stare at the AI blankly, mumble something in Mongolian at her.

((Umm, Karl, I think this is a single-character suggestion game. I might be wrong, but that's how it seems.))

(That's what i'm thinking but i don't see a reason why i shouldn't try, I mean i've seen suggestion games turn into full on roleplay, so why can't a single player go to multiplayer?)

((Hubris was correct.  But I accept Karl's suggestion.  Gotta work in half an hour, so that'll give time for people to join up.))
This game is now a multiplayer roleplaying game.  9 Players max, choose your names, description and field of study.
Players who fail to make an update once a week are either replaced, npc'd or killed off.  Playerlist spoiler added to opening post.

((Ask the AI if we may remove the respirators yet))

"ey ee rmoove ee sirtors?"
"NO!"  She shouts shrilly.  Her chest heaving, she calms herself and raises a finger like an instructor.  "The cryopods run on a high oxygen mix at 100kpa, or 1 Earth atmospheric unit.  The ships internal atmosphere is 33kpa, with a 25% oxygen mix."  She leans forward.  "Please do not remove your resperators, it is slowly adjusting the air pressure and composition of your lungs, any sudden changes in that process would be a severe shock to your cardiovascular system."

((Sit up in the pod, stare at the AI blankly, mumble something in Mongolian at her.))

You have confused the AI.  Congratulations.

((Karl Marx;Kijii Algaruu: Reach for respirator after sitting up further.))

After a moment of panic, the metallic taste in your mouth reminds you that the resperator is still fitted firmly in between your teeth.  You feel the pressure on your diaphragm lessen, but you still don't need to breath.

Kijii:Winces a bit as the respirator jerks at her teeth, she turns to the AI and speaks more Mongolian, adjusting her jaw so the respirator isn't as annoying.

((Sir, this is improv, everything is good.))

((Hollister: "Whaff ee air wiqe whea weew go-ng, Ayai?" (What's the air like where we're going, AI)))

The AI pauses and closes her eyes.  Her brow, furrowed in concentration.  Her eyebrows raise to the ceiling, "This is the initial scan of the planet.  Please do not jump to conclusions, as my Starboard Sensor Array is offline."

((Hollister: Look around at equipment))
Inside the room is the central Genetics control consoles, along the far wall is a local power box.  On the right side of the room is a security camera.

The AI turns buisness like after showing the planet display "As ship AI, my goal is to protect your lives at any cost while preserving the mission."  Her hand flicks to the planet display and it vanishes.  "If this planet is unable to sustain human life; I will do whatever necessary to preserve your genetic information."

((Kijii:Winces a bit as the respirator jerks at her teeth, she turns to the AI and speaks more Mongolian, adjusting her jaw so the respirator isn't as annoying.))

The pressure on your internals seems to have stabalized.  The air has begun to feel sickly humid, sticking to the inside of your throat with each breath and is really uncomfortable.  The AI seems to be able to translate your Mongolian now, or has just made an educated guess as to what you were saying.  "It is now safe to leave your cryostasis units..."  She says in mongolian "...and remove the mouth pieces."  She sighs smiling, "It is nice to have people to talk to finally.  Please assist in preparing this ship for possible landing and survey of planet.  I am always available.  Estimated time of arrival: 3 hours, 20 minutes."  She bows and flickers out of sight.
