Performance increase
« on: February 12, 2008, 09:21:00 pm »

well after starting a new fort, I actually realised how laggy my bigger 100 pop fort was. Its really bad.

any tricks on increasing performance? Usually more graphical games have some things you can do to increase performance. and I dont mean safe mode :P

I only have a 3 Ghz processor (not dual core)
and if RAM does anything I have 3 GBs

Try my rig with 512 MB and 2.16 GHz.  20 FPS at my last fort...with less than 40 residents...

Smaller areas help.  I usually choose 4x4 or 3x3 sites, removing excess stone is supposed to help, and ending unneeded processes in windows helps too.
Theres other tricks but I don't remember them all.

In the .init file change the '50 Gfps rate' (not fps rate) to 10.

Seconding the smaller map thing, also try turning off temperature and weather, that helps quite a bit.

Capping your pop at like 80 or so might be a good idea too.

See http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Maximizing_framerate
The only other advice I can offer is getting a new CPU  :)

But what do I know?
Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

Go into data > init > init.txt, there should be a line in there that says [POPULATION_CAP:200], just change the number to whatever you want. (keep in mind though that if you set it to '80' and at some point wind up with 79 dwarves, you can still get another full immigration wave at that point, they only stop coming when you're at the cap or above.)

How do you cap your pop?  Do it pulp fiction style, and pop a cap in 'em

Another thing to do is to use Regional Prospector to make sure the embark map has no rivers and no features. The map might not be as interesting but it'll sure be faster. In many ways the game is about choices, and in this case you have to choose between speed and interesting maps.

z levels make a difference too.  A map with 7z level high cliffs will run slower then rolling 2z level hills.  Keeping your fort to one or two z levels will help also.

I think you're better off with a single core as I don't think dual cores are supported yet.

What I do that really helps performance is increase the processing priority to Real Time.

Yeah, windows is not meant to run realtime stuff, at all.  Too many interruptions.

QB]

Until dual core is supported... and then you will feel silly for not getting a dual core just because DF didn't use it at the time.  Maybe I only found this funny because I play tons of computer games that are not DF and will use my dual core and it makes them run sooooo much better.

I hear setting DF to use one core and setting everything else to another core helps to speed things up.

Setting the process priority to Realtime actually made DF run slower for me. I think "High" was slightly faster, but I can't remember.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.
