In good news, the proposed Robocop Statue for downtown Detroit was approved, with the inscription: "Dead or alive, you're coming with me."

Speaking of which, now that the auto industry has collapsed there, Detroit should base its new economy around making itself a giant urban set to film post apocalyptic movies in.

So you suggest clearing out the mutants and raiders to make it safer for the film crews?

...Michigan is taking clearest step ever to the literal definition of corporatocracy, authorizing private financial agencies virtually unlimited power to unmake democratically-constructed local governments at their leisure. ...

Reminds me of this quote:
Quote
"Fascism should more properly be called Corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." -- attributed to Benito Mussolini

No verified evidence exists that he actually said it.
Still, it follows his idea of the all powerful Corporate State, government and business hand-in-hand.

This kind of folly always emerges during hard times.
The Republic is easily lost when neglected.

Man, I knew that there were good reasons for me to want to leave this place ASAP, but this really cements it. Now, the question is, where do I move TO?

Honestly, if we bail from Detroit, we need to make sure we salvage the Fist.

Great. I decide to finally read one of the topical threads in GD, and it's full of depressing fucking developments.

I mean, in a perfect world, this would actually work and be administrated with only a minimum of corruption and erosion of American Law. In an ok world, it would improve some things while being fairly corrupt and damaging to the rule of law.

In the actual world of today....it'll probably turn into Bioshock by 2015. Seriously, if Andrew Ryan turned out to the accredited manager in charge of New Michigan, riding into town on the stuffed and mechanized corpse of Ayn Rand I would not be all that surprised.

...Ayn Rand...

Oh god, please don't go there, I've had this debate many times, ask Aqizzar.

And just for clarification Ayn Rand was against the government legislating in favour of corporations (like this) the same as she was with the government legislating in favour of unions.

Neutrality favors the strong over the weak.  Enforced neutrality doubly so.  But the real problem with the theory is that Ayn Rand's disciples didn't even remotely pursue a policy of not helping out the rich and powerful.  Look at the career of Greenspan, her most powerful disciple.  Look at the budget of Paul Ryan, the most influential man today who ascribes to her views.  To say that they didn't favor intervening in favor of the rich and powerful is downright absurd.

Well, obviously it has been manipulated, but the actual philosophy wanted to protect the rights of the individual.

I'm going to go to bed before we derail and have this thread degenerate into arguing over Objectivism.
