Bah. This is a free country. If we don't want it to be a free country that is our right!

Freedom is the power to impose my will on others, regardless of their protestation?

...Holy shit, meanwhile in Canada we have a lackluster election and the royal wedding. Try not to become a dictatorship while I'm out, mmkay?
It is a dictatorship technically, with the queen of England the supreme ruler (as i am pretty sure she could fly to Canada tomorrow and dissolve parliament if she felt like it).

Even if the law says she could, legal and actual power are not the same.

Meh, that's why I said technically, I know that if she actually tried that Canada would just cut it's ties with the UK

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

Monarchs can possibly do that in the UK if a government really can't be formed.  That'd trigger a reelection.  Not sure about Canada.

Although if you meant full dismissal... well, do you know what happened to the last monarch who tried that?

Nah, we would humour her for as long as humanly possible because that would be fucking adorable.

Also because we love Her very much.

She can do it to Canada, because she is the head of goverment there and can do (pretty much) anything she wants (technically). She can't do it in the UK however.

And i doubt that Canada would declare war on the UK, which is what they would need to do to do anything to the queen (although they would probably break off from the UK).

Hey, here's a great idea to make foster children feel better: Force them to buy hand-me-downs.

Hey, here's a great idea to make foster children feel better: Force them to buy hand-me-downs.

*shrug*

I don't fully know what to say, given that I bought my first article of new clothing at age... 16?  And basically everything I own is used, including my books.

Maybe it's different if you're a foster kid--I can't say I really understand.  I don't think that should be the first avenue for budget-balancing, either.  Not at all.  But the argument that it's so horrible to own clothing that wasn't yours first, well, I think that's a bit weak.  My cousins used to tell me that my mother had used up all her kindness and enthusiasm raising them, so I didn't get any >_>  That was a bit difficult to take, given that I was also getting their worn-out clothing, books, and stuff.

Meh.  I don't know.  I can definitely agree that it's a nice thing (I was not exactly happy being the only one in my high school economics class who raised my hand when the teacher asked who wore used clothing), but I sort of feel like there might be better ways for that money to be used, for the foster kids, than new clothing.

I guess there's something about it which implicitly says "You're not worth new clothes, so we'll legislate to make sure someone like you will never get them".  As well as making "used clothes" a reliable marker for foster children.

Ugh, you're right.  That does make sense.
