Multiple Room assignment Bug
« on: October 05, 2006, 03:27:00 pm »

Near as I can tell, this is a bug:

When I assign a room to one of my dwarves, it becomes assigned to two of them.

I built some room suites over by the magma forge, with the intention of assigning them to my metalsmiths.

When I assign a bedroom, dining room and study to "Reg Dorenban, Metalsmith", everything's fine.

When I do the same for "Kadol Arkimkilrud, Metalsmith", when I return to examine the bedroom with 'Q' I find it assigned to "Kadol Arkimkilrud, Metalsmith" and "Kadol Igeratir, Mason".  Same happened with the dining room, but not the office.

Version is df_21_105_21a

Thanks!

I think the reason is that they are a couple.

To hijack this thread: How do you do a search of all forums, rather than one at a time?

You learn how to program perl, come on IRC, volunteer to fix this message board, then add the feature.

Sorry, not the answer you wanted, I know.

As far as I know this isn't a bug, the two dwarves are just married.

Speaking of a multi-assignment bug - if you have a room with a bed, a table or any two or more items in which you can assign a specific room to (dining, bed, study etc) and also have weapon racks and such items, then these items will count once for each time you assign overlapping rooms. Kinda noticed this when I made rooms for nobles - who have their snobby requirements and all.

Dunno if this is known or not, nor is this serious or anything but perhaps this should be fixed?

Yeah, we had a thread on this somewhere...  the current penalty for overlapping rooms isn't high enough (it cuts the value down to 1/4, but you just need to cram lots of people in to overcome that).

I don't think any reasonable value reduction could solve it, though...  you'd have to kill the value of a shared room completely (or almost completely).

Maybe you could add an unhappy thought for whenever the dwarf notices that a room it is using is shared...  "Was forced to sleep/eat/etc in a shared room recently" or something?  And more dwarves sharing a room cause that thought more often.

Yeah -- it could even use the same mechanic as being annoyed at people walking through your room, which could be based on the "chat" code.  If you "chat" with somebody in your private room who isn't welcome there, maybe it isn't a friendly chat.  And if you are assigned to the room, this would happen all the time.  There could be other unhappy thoughts from sharing storage.  Instead of slashing value, it could be capped to avoid the good thoughts overwhelming any bad thoughts, since the good thoughts can be qute powerful.

Would that differentiate between people walking through your room to be jerks (or because bad architecture has made it the fastest route) and people walking through your room to, for instance, engrave your dining room wall?

I suppose they could talk about that.  They already have content-free chats they use to make friends, but perhaps these room discusses would be one good inroad for keeping conversation logs, making proper friends, forming grudges and so on.
