I did some testing of my own with that sample GCS, and it seems overpowered. I say that it's spending points get reduced.

Evidence-- DF RAWS:

Code: [Select]
[NO_SLEEP]
[NOPAIN][EXTRAVISION][NOSTUN][NOEMOTION][NOFEAR]...
[SYNDROME]
[SYN_NAME:giant cave spider bite]
[SYN_AFFECTED_CLASS:GENERAL_POISON]
[SYN_IMMUNE_CREATURE:SPIDER_CAVE:ALL]
[SYN_INJECTED]
[CE_PARALYSIS:SEV:100:PROB:100:RESISTABLE:SIZE_DILUTES:START:5:PEAK:10:END:20]

With it's poison, [NOPAIN], [NOSTUN], and [NOFEAR], it seems quite overpowered.

Just look at that-- [CE_PARALYSIS:SEV:100:PROB:100:RESISTABLE:SIZE_DILUTES:START:5:PEAK:10:END:20]
A 100% percent chance of almost immediate sever paralysis?

The GCS has trouble biting through even clothing.  So if your fighter had more than just a loincloth on...   I believe robes cover everything but the head, hands, and feet.

But I agree that its a bit overpowered.  I've moved it and some other creatures off of the normal starting tier.

I went through the point system just a few minutes ago to revise things so that low level stuff is a bit cheaper and high level stuff gets considerably more expensive.  I've edited the character builds to meet the new setup.

I'd seen in the forums that whips and scourges were crazy overpowered, but I didn't think much of it until now.  I ran a few tests in the arena, and your fighter was reliably taking down the other 3 while they were on the same team.  So whips and scourges have been nerfed a little.  I've increased the maximum contact area by 10x, but kept the minimum the same.  It seems like you still get those bone chipping, brain splatting shots every shot still, so I might need to do some more tweaking.  It's too bad, because I was hoping not to alter the weapons at all, but with results like this, everyone would be foolish not to use a whip.

I ran a match with the new setups for Doom vs. Ithera Ebire

Yeah, whips are currently a bit overpowered. And, another headshot for me! He likes doing that a lot.

I checked your points, and you are good.  I'm going to do another couple test fights tonight.  I'm thinking some team fights and another battle royale.  I'll throw Wraith in instead of the house werewolf.

Its time for another four contestant battle royale.  (As arena planning is still ongoing deaths will not be permanent and the only prize is pride.)

In the first corner, we have fresh from the elven-ratmen wars...Alista arna!  Seeking glory and fame, she dual wields swords while wearing leather clothing made from the skins of her former foes.  We wish you better luck than last fight.

Next is Ithera Ebire, winner of the last battle royale and responsible for every kill shot so far in the arena.  Wielding a steel whip and wearing nothing but a loincloth, this is an elf to fear.

The third fighter, from the dark tunnels below the arena, is the reptile man Doom.  He has traded in his sword for a slightly duller one and a lot more armor.  Will it stop a whip to the brain?

And we are replacing the crazy, defence obsessed werewolf with another were, but this one should be more dangerous.  He's got a sword and the skill and brains to use it.  Wraith!

First blood is to Ithera Ebire.  He whips Doom in the left foot and Doom falls over from the pain.  Across the arena Alista Arna and Wraith haven't even grabbed their swords yet. Instead Wraith punched at Alista, she parried, and punched him back in the left hand, crushing it.

A whip to Dooms chest, and now he is having trouble breathing. Another whip, shattering the right foot.  Ithera Ebire looks like he is playing with Doom now.  Chipping one bone after another.

Wraith charges at Alista, knocking her onto her back. He strike at her quickly..again..again, but they are all parried. She stands up, but Wraith knocks her over again.  He drives his steel longsword into her skull, tearing a artery.  But Alista Arna lives! Not for long though, as Wraith drives the sword home again tearing apart the brain.

Wraith runs across the arena.  Looks like he wants to hit Ithera Ebire with everything he's got while Doom is still there to distract him.  Ithera goes for the kill with one shot, then another to Doom's head.  Doom's skull is shattered, like most of his body, but the helm has kept his brain safe so far.

Not safe enough.  The 6th blow to the head ended Doom's suffering.

And now we are down to 2.  Ithera Ebire, untouched by injury, and Wraith, with a damaged nonweapon hand and the first kill by someone other than Ithera.

Which turns out to be not much of a fight.  A lash to the arm, and wraith gives in to the pain.  A lash to the head, and Wraith is dead.

What kind of whip is Ithera Ebire using out there?  An official investigation will look into the matter.  But in the meantime, our fallen fighters are being revived.  They will all three take on Ithera Ebire in a 3 on 1 grudge match.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Grudge Match
(Ithera Ebire can't whip three people through the skull at the same time, can he?)

The match is off.  Ithera Ebire gets the first strike, hitting Doom in the left leg. Wraith strikes, but is parried.  Alista Arna strikes, and Ithera Ebire counters with a strike to the chest, fracturing ribs.

The allied fighters hit Ithera like a wave, knocking him over.  They keep trying to get a shot past that parrying whip.  Finally one does.  Wraith stabs Ithera in the arm, and his blade gets stuck.  But he is back on his feet, and now Ithera Ebire goes after Doom's feet again.

Seconds pass, every shot parried by a whip.  Finally Doom has enough.  He feigns with his sword, then punches Ithera Ebire in the guts.  Wraith takes advantage of the stunned elf, quickly lopping off his left arm, his right arm, and embedding his sword in the elf's guts.  Ithera Ebire has fallen.

I'm really not sure what to do about whips.  I was hoping to be able to keep weapon types free, but they do rediculus damage.  I've got a couple more raw tweaks to try out, but if they don't work I'm going to have to revise the point system some more.

Edit:  I think I may have found an acceptable modification of whips.  Here is what I changed the raws to:

[ITEM_WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_WHIP]
[NAME:whip:whips]
[SIZE:10]
[SKILL:WHIP]
[TWO_HANDED:27500]
[MINIMUM_SIZE:22500]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:1]
[ATTACK:BLUNT:15:1:lash:lashes:NO_SUB:2000]

Whips still seem to win a lot of 1 on 1 fights, but there is a chance of a win for non whip users now.

Re: The Arena Mode test v3 (Tourney)
« Reply #40 on: March 15, 2011, 09:01:42 am »

I'm going to do a test tourney over the next two weeks.  I would like to do a 16 contestant tourney.  The 4 fighters that are already created, any fighters created within the next two days, and to fill in any gaps, the sample characters and other oddities.

So I need some new creations to stock the tourney with.  The more diverse the selection, the better.  Undead sea monsters, armor clad rabbits, amphibious carp, fire imps, even a unicorn!

Matches will be seeded for the first round as contestants enter.

1    Ithera Ebire  (Rabbit)
16

8
9

5    Arena Carp  (Amphibious Carp)
12

4    Alista Arna  (Elf)
14

6
11

3    Skriss (Serpent man)
14

7
10

2    Wraith  (Werewolf)
15

Testing is nearing an end.  So there will be rewards associated with the fights.

The winner of a fight wins their choice of one of these:

1.  one item belonging to their opponent.  This item will be added to their inventory as is for their next fight. After their next fight, the item can be upgraded or traded in.
2.  Points equal to 1/2 the value of their opponent's most valuable item.  These are immediately available to spend.
3.  1 free skill level upgrade for a skill at talented level or above OR 2 free skill level upgrades for a skill/s below talented level.

After the tourney's end, you have a choce.  Let your fighter be reverted to how they started this tournament or make a new fighter, because testing will be at an end.

Did I mention that the tournament winner gets to keep their winnings, and will be the first recognised Arena Champion?
For winning the tournament, the winner will also be raised to proficient in a skill of their choice that they have no levels in.

I'll make a Serpent Man monk for the tourney, then. Can anyone guess what my favorite creatures are in DF?

EDIT:
Owner: Crazy Cow
Name:  Kriss
Species: Serpent Man
Gender: Male
Weapon: None
Ammo: None
Head Armour: Bismuth Bronze Helm, 23 points (If I am not mistaken, you find the point value of the material, then the item you want, and add the two. Rignt?)
Hand Armour: Black Bronze Gauntlets, 18 points
Body Armour: Black Bronze Chain Mail, 24 points
Foot Armour: None
Leg Armour: None
Shields: None
Skills: Competent Dodger, 14 points
         Skilled Wrestler, 20 points
Total: 99 points

EDIT EDIT:
As for whips, I don't know too terribly much about weapon modding. I seem to remember that the higher the contact area, the higher the chance to injure organs with attacks. That's about as much as I can help you.

And for those of you who already have fighters, if you want any changes let me know.

I'll start having the 1st round fights as I get entrants slotted.

If anyone has any questions about the points allowed for a creature not in the tier system yet just let me know.

I'll be entering a creature who will be purchasing the amphibious mutation.

I present to you!  The arena carp!

New and improved, the carp can breath air and move on land.  The carp has been slotted with the kobolds, as they are both dangerous creatures, but should lose 1 on 1 against a dwarf most of the time.

Name: Arena Carp
Species: Amphibious Carp (150 pts - 10% = 135 pts available)
Occupation: Eating fishermen
Weapon:  Teeth
Armor:  Spellwood helm (15 pts) and Spellwood mail shirt (25 pts)
Skills:  Adept Biter (46)  Adept Fighter (46)  Adequate Armor User (8)
Total = 135 pts

Starting points are determined by your species.  Pick any valid species.  Take the tiered number for your fighter's species, modify by any mutations, and you will have your total starting amount.

Items:  These have two parts:  Type and Material.  Choose both and add together to get the final value.  Note that just like in the regular game, some materials and item types just don't go together.
Skills: Purchased with the same points as items.

Yep, that is how you do items, Item+material.  But the black bronze gauntlets would be 18 points each, not as a set.  So you are currently at 117 pts.
