How to use a waterfall
« on: March 09, 2011, 07:24:30 am »

Hi guys!

Can anyone detail, or better yet, reference me to some guide as to how to use a waterfall? I've read the wiki article which says Urist can walk under it, but I don't get the construction concept. Thing is, I got a map with a nice waterfall (that's currently frozen) and I'm not sure how to plan this into my fortress.

- thats up at z 149
- thats down at z 144

Thanks!!

Waterfalls generate mist and dwarves get happy if they get hit by it. Make something that the dwarves frequent next to the waterfall. I usually place my main stairs next to the waterfall. Be sure to block the waterfall so that the dwarves don't drop there, but still are affected by the mist. Fortifications, bars and wall grates work for this.

So the stairwell is like behind the waterfall? And that wall is exchanged with fortifications?

Urist is complaining about damp stone behind the waterfall... how do you circumvent this?

Edit the announcements.txt in the init-directory to stop the pausing and the whining..though I don't know if you can disable the warning entirely and just have the damn dwarves dig anyway.

I usually end up just designating over and over again, until it's all done.  Once you've revealed some damp stone that stone is okay to dig, but behind it lies more damp stone which ends up revealed, warned about and undesignated, ad nauseam.

I like fortresses because they are still underground.
