Umm, spoilers? Clownite -> Clownium
« on: March 08, 2011, 11:47:06 am »

I don't know about any of you, but I never imagined Adamantium as anything but a dense, silvery-black metal, suitable for armor and weapons.  But in Dwarf Fortress we have Adamantite.  And it's light.  And kinda sucks for armor.  Sure it's sharp, but it's so light it floats.

This shall not pass in my world!

So I got to thinking.  If one were to combine Adamantite with something denser... let's say Steel? In a damascene-type layering? Maybe that would give it the density it would need to become good armor.

What I need to know is how to achieve this in a mod.  I know it should have something in the reactions.txt area.  But I'm not sure what.

Also, I'm up for ideas on what could be alloyed with Adamantite to make it more durable.

I'm not really sure how this would be done, but this is essentially programming. I would approach it like so:
Look at the reactions for other metals, compare them to see what differences in code produce what differences in the outcome, and try to work out what bits of code do what. From there just copy pasta stuff together to test if it works. If it does than you know you were right in your estimates, if it doesn't than you know you were wrong. Repeat until you understand it.

...That's just what I would do. Also it might help if you build yourself a raw dictionary file, each little command with a comment explaining what it does.

The main tag you want to fool around with is SOLID_DENSITY, and then LIQUID_DENSITY and MOLAR_MASS. I don't know what the last one does in-game, but it correlates with density so change it anyway.

To create adamantine that's as dense as steel you need to make a new metal entry that copies the text of the adamantine entry, with the exception of the density and molar mass values (those would naturally be taken from the steel entry, maybe reduce them a touch to simulate the adamantine within the material).
To make the stuff in-game, you need a reaction that produces it. No adherance to physics or sanity is required -- you can make the stuff out of thin air at the tannery using no fuel and the fish dissector skill should you desire. Reactions have a very basic 'reagent in, product out, no questions asked' format, so it's up to you to balance it out.

Materials currently are what they are all the way through. You can call something layered if you like, but it's just a label.

I recommend Valdemar's Mod Manager for looking at the raws. It beats the hell out of opening multiple Notepad files.

Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I use Notepad++ myself... I find it makes everything scripty alot easier.

I'm thinking that in the end, I might just make Adamantite into what I was wanting it to be all along.  Seriously... metal shouldn't float.  That's just crazy.

I know what I'm going to do.  But question:

What physical characteristic gives silver it's punch when used in a warhammer?

Adamantinite is based of the word "Adamant" which means "unyielding and unbreaking" for which it fits its name.  It is very different from Adamantium and other X-Men related metals, but is similar in that it includes the letters "adaman" so assumptions are made.

You're free to do what you want, I just thought I'd point out that this is Toady's metal and not the classic hard stuff.

Does it make bad armor? I thought it was good for everything but hammers, unless it got changed...

It makes fantastic armor.  Weight != Armor.  Steel is lightweight, but very strong and difficult to break.  Iron is heavier, and tends to be brittle and shatter when hit hard enough.  Adamantine is very light, allowing your soldiers to move fast, and very durable, withstanding a great deal of punishment.  On the other hand, you can mod armor from platinum, which is very heavy, but horribly armor because it has low fracture and bending strengths.

What you want is probably a custom reaction in either reaction_other or reaction_smelter. Also, you'll have to make a new material. Just take the raws for adamantine and change some stuff around. I'm a fairly noob modder, though, so I don't think I would know what to mess with.

I felt like giving this a try. Haven't tested it yet, but it should work...

I don't really get the units used for material properties though.

Metal:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All I changed was the density, making it slightly lighter than steel.

Reaction:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I went with 100 there for the wafers to line up with what the "make adamantine wafers" reaction produces.

And don't forget to add [PERMITTED_REACTION:ADAMANT_MAKING] to the dwarf entity raws.

Oh I'm aware of the poetic license that Toady should be allowed.  That's fine with me.  It's just having a metal that is less dense than water drove me nuts.  And Adamantium has been in far more places than just X-Men. It's a form of unobtanium found in many works of fantasy and science fiction.  My personal favorite is the Adamantium from The Golden Transcendence trilogy.  That was described as a transuranic element found in a marginally stable part of the chemical chart, far past the known elements, and only able to be made with a Matter/Antimatter reactor.  Adamantium-263 I believe it was.  Actually theoretically possible, although scientists don't know anything about the Island Of Stability's properties other than they would be very heavy and metallic.

Indeed. I'm relatively certain that the difference between the terms "Adamantium" and "Adamantite"/"Adamantine" is mostly just concerned with whether the metal appears in a fantasy or a science-fiction medium. Other than that they're both just a generic name that can be given to a particular world's main preposterously durable fictional metal.

EDIT: oops, quoted the wrong post...

Originally, the noun appears to have been "adamant", while the adjectival form - meaning something of or pertaining to adamant - was "adamantine". Satan's shield is "of tenfold adamant" in Paradise Lost, while he's sent "to bottomless perdition, there to dwell in adamantine chains and penal fire". Virgil mentions adamant in the Aeneid, saying of Tartarus,
"Porta adversa ingens, solidoque adamante columnae,
vis ut nulla virum, non ipsi exscindere bello
caelicolae valeant"
,
or, roughly (my Latin's a little rusty):
"A huge gate faces out, with pillars of solid adamant, so strong that no man, nor the gods themselves may prevail in demolishing them by warfare."
The word "adamant" is derived from Greek "ἀδάμας" (adamas), meaning "invincible", via Latin "adamantem", the accusative singular form of "adamas". "Aδάμας" itself is derived from ἀ- (a-, "not") + δαμάζω (damazo, "I tame"), so literally it means "untameable".
"Aδάμας" in Greek becomes "ἀδάμαντος" (adamantos) in the genitive; so the loan word in Latin becomes "adamantis" and the stem is adamant-. Thus, the adjectival form, "adamantine", is derived from adamant- + -inus, a suffix that usually expresses a relationship of position, possession or origin. So "adamantine" means "made of adamant".
There you go. A brief history of adamant(ine/ite/ium).

Come to think of it, isn't "Diamond" ultimately derived from the same root word?
