This would assume that people would even want Modern Warfare 2 for free.

But yes, scam. Avoid it. Check.

Not so different from the age old non-gaming-related trick of "You is the 1,000,001th visitor to this internet site, A WINNER IS YOU!"[sic]

It gets old fast.

And yet people still do it, since people are still dumb enough to fall for it. :-\

Yeknow the only time I ever got anything like a scam was when I got an email asking to confirm my password or else it would be reset automatically. I was very paranoid about it, then my brother tells me that he couldn't remember my password and tried to reset it...

Good rule of thumb, check the home domain, that is to say the last part of the address, steam's two official websites are:
steampowered.com
and
steamcommunity.com
If it's not from one of those two, then it's probably not legit... in fact if it's coming through your email at all it's probably not legit. Steam does all it's special sales and giveaway announcements over steam itself.

Pfft, that's nothing. A rich Nigerian king decided to pick me as his descendant and now he will transfer me the majority of his life-savings - and that's a couple of million dollars. I'm going to be rich!

Now where did I put those couple hundreds to pay for the alleged transfer charges ...

I've had friends receive a "please enter your password", do so, immediately go "ummmm", phone me for advice, I say "go to the right site and change your password, I'll be over shortly to help out" and by the time I've arrived they've received a second, similarly themed mail from the same spanners saying "thank you for supplying your password, but it appears you've changed it, please could you supply your new one"...  By then, we'd locked things down.

Yes, my friends were silly enough to believe this first one (it was very early on in their net experience, they're very much savvy these days), but that the scammers apparently had a prepared email for those that changed their password (with the expectation that this would work?) says strange things about something.  I'm not sure what.

But in other, rather older, news...

All I ever get is Blizzard requests to login and reset my password. Buggers even fake the apparent sender e-mail address to a legitimate Blizzard one (there's some inanity in the mailing protocol that allows this). Though at least they can't fake the URL they ask you to open.

They can't get it signed by Blizzard's mailservers, though.
Gmail is nice enough to show that it's signed by "yahoo.com" or "hotmail.com" (obvious indicators of forgery).
When you get an email, make sure you check the full information on the sender.
