Yup, pistols are always fine. I have a revolver and a hatchet. It's not limited to Primary-Secondary, you can have lots of stuff if you can carry it all.
Skills provide weapon bonuses. So do abilities. If a weapon is masterwork it may give a bonus (Depending on the type. Cool guns won't make you aim better unless it has a good sight.) Therefore having a steel weapon as opposed to a copper one won't make you hit more, it'll just do more damage if you do hit.

Lets start then.
The group arrives at their first destination. However, in their rush to adventure, they have forgotten what they were planning to do. There are caravans passing through the road that runs through the small town of Barakar. Merchants wander the streets, looking for people to sell their merchandise to. The town is mostly filled with shacks and taverns. Despite this, the market downtown is always buzzing with life. There are trails leading outside the town to various other locations.
The group walks up to an intersection. According to the signs, the castle of Ridgewalled is to the north, near a major iron mine. There is a larger city in the grassland east where the blacksmith Nathan Smith is known to be, and to the southeast there is a road leading straight to the capital.
The sky is gray, with a light shower of rain dampening the countryside. The farms outside the village are constantly plagued by thieves, and the farmers are always looking for revenge.
