Bone Axe, Awesome or Fail?
« on: March 07, 2011, 02:24:07 pm »

So i now have a new artifact after a mood, and it is "Hailpuzzling the Socketed Magician", a donkey bone axe.
This is a donkey bone battle axe. All craftdwarfship is of the highest quality.
That's it. No ornamentation, or excessive spikes.

Does bone work as a cutting weapon? I realise bone bolts work quite well because of the whole cutting/surface area thing, but a bone axe?

Basically i want to know if i want my awesomemurderdorf wielding a steel axe, or this presumably terrifying monstrosity carved from animal bones.

It would be like trying to cut a steak with a piece of string. Bone is pretty much useless for everything other than decorating objects.

If it were elf bone or FB bone, perhaps, but donkey?  Meh, trade that shit in for copper.

Maybe its changed but in 31.18 in one of my forts i gave my militia commander a donkey bone artifact axe and even with expert combat skills he couldnt do anything but dent the scales of a megabeast with "cerulean scales". So i think the axe lies somewhere between copper and iron/bronze

If adamantine is perfectly rigid, as shown by having 0 strain at fracture in the raw files, then the speed of sound in the metal approaches the speed of light. Adamantine musical instruments would produce ultrasonic vibrations, and cut off the fingers of the musician.

actually, bone, not being a metal (and not having edge properties) has absolutely no effect on cutting weapons, its about as effective as a blunt stick

Yeah, in the pre-2010 versions it would still be an awesome axe, but now no matter how good the quality is, it still won't do much damage due to the poor material.

You simply need to mod the Goblins to be called Philistines.

In order to improve the universe's frame rate, we must all throw rocks into volcanoes and then do absolutely nothing, worldwide, for a week, to take pressure off pathfinding.
or maybe throw them into the large hadron collider to atom-smash them instead.
Not to mention to throw all available animals into tiny pits.

You can always build a weapon trap, place the weapon in it, and get a legendary dining hall or noble's room.

It's just a cerimonial weapon. Won't do shit in real combat, alot like a golden sword, although probably even more useless.

Be sure to socket it with a flawless elf skull.

Edit: I guess you could actually encrust it with gems..awesome!

Neither.  Skulls cannot be used to decorate an item, weapons and armor cannot be encrusted with gems, and artifacts are immune from all forms of decoration after they're made.

You can always build a weapon trap, place the weapon in it, and get a legendary dining hall or noble's room.
This. Add it to a weapon trap where lots of dwarves have to pass it, such as on the center tile of a 3-wide hallway, and dwarves passing it will neatly offset the "caught in the rain" moodlet.

Done, this fine piece of useless tat is now the centerpiece of my main hallway between the food stores/front entrance/dining room in a weapons trap. Everyone seems oddly happy about this.
