Legacy vs SDL
« on: March 07, 2011, 07:35:58 am »

I was just curious as to whether anybody played the Legacy versions of the latest releases or in some way used them.

Someone asked in the .21 thread whether time would be saved if the Legacy version was never compiled. I decided I was curious as to whether it would make a difference to anyone enough for them to post in a poll.

As far as I know, Legacy has less fps/graphics-related improvements than SDL (as the names suggest). It is therefore less functional, but also theoretically "purer".

What is legacy? The prior release?

SDL, havent actually tried legacy lately, because my old computer(or more like parts) couldnt run DF at a reasonable fps without the graphics improvements.

What is legacy? The prior release?

Approximately a year and a half ago, Baughn rewrote some of the DF code to offload some of the graphics functions onto the video card. The SDL versions use that code, the Legacy versions do not.

I also exclusively use SDL, and I'm not aware of anyone who uses Legacy. I'm sure that Toady has statistics about how many times each is downloaded from his servers at least, if not the mirrors.

I had no idea what the difference was.  Is there any easy way to tell what version you are using?

The SDL version has a folder called "SDL" in the root of the DF directory. The legacy version does not.

Easiest way to tell, I suppose.

So this all leaves us with one question... Who voted legacy in this poll?

The SDL version is awesome, with no bugs related to the SDL-parts that I've found.  My most favorite recent feature for sure.

I use legacy.
Why?

Yes, due tell. I'm curious as well. Now I want to run both and see how the performance differs.
