Smalls of Oceania
« on: March 06, 2011, 09:17:22 pm »

44 miles above the surface of Oceania, a tiny ship stalls in midflight.

This small spacecraft is hardly the length of a pencil, and only twice as thick, but in it's belly it carries the seeds of civilization, the seeds of life. Too bad the planet below already has both, but you don't always get what you want in life, and sometimes you hardly get what you need.

There are 5 still living species of sentients in this spacecraft, enough to start a small colony each. In fact, that is what they are meant to do, each given a small pod for their eggs to go into. As the ship enters the atmosphere,  the ships computers wake up, painfully slowly. So slowly, in fact, the ship is almost into the ocean before the pods disperse.

Each pod is the size of one button on a normal television remote. Although the pods deploy retrorockets, they still have the speed and power to make it all the way to the sea floor. the pods carefully re-pressurize themselves to match the new pressures exerted on them from the surrounding waters as they descend, being prepared and ready to deploy by the time they reach the Sea Floor.

It should be mentioned that the area is rather empty at this time, most sea life being away for a time or asleep. Smalls grow quickly, but the things should still be back in time to notice the smalls before they do anything, if they are not inside something! As the leader of your tribe of Smalls, you have the responsibility of finding shelter, and rediscovering enough technology to spread your race up into the higher layer of ocean and across the planet!

Go forth, and multiply!

Name: Peretics
Starting Spot: One of those sunken cars used to make artificial reefs
Description: A Crustacean Species. They have 2 legs and 2 arms with claws and two large fins attached to their shoulders for propulsion. Their shells are Purple with Red stripes and their arms are designed too pull that awesome shock-wave bubble things that pistol shrimps do. Their heads look like lobsters with mandibles. They also have a big tail shaped in a whale style

Name: Kriblits
Starting spot: Sand under the Leviathan (A whale)
Description: Small floating critters, they have many tiny legs coming from their sides. These legs can vibrate to swim and dig though sand. They feed by catching microscopic bits of organic matter in their leg. On their face is a long proboscis that they comb though their legs constantly to pick up food. They can spit a fast acting goo from their proboscis that quickly turns into a hard cement like mixture.

Name: Caerri (Ss-ay-ree)
Starting Spot: The bones of some large ocean dwelling creature
Description: The Caerri are little more than than an oblong mass of soft tissue, they do possess the peculiar ability to create a body from masses of created non-essential cells. The size of the body is limited to the speed at which electrical pulses can reach from the tip of the pseudopod to the main mass of the creature. While the created cells are not essential to the survival of the Caerri it is incredibly weak, slow, and blind without them. The Caerri exchange information by linking their extended nervous systems, briefly forming a singular consciousness, prolonged contact will eventually result in the death of the weaker of the two Caerri.

Name: Floatune
Starting Spot: Base of a Kelp Tree
Description: Spherical in shape, the Floatune are made of soft, translucent tissue. They radiant a faint, cyan glow from the bio luminescent bacteria embedded in their tissue. Due to their low body density, they float a a few mms to up to a cm up from the sea floor without expending any energy. To move, they propel water out of the various tiny holes in their tissue. The bottom of a Floatune has a small hole, which sucks in algae and anything else it can catch. To communicate, they propel water out of a specialized hole, which can change shape to vibrate the water in different ways.

Can we have a map maybe? To better chose starting areas?

Spoiler: Map! (click to show/hide)
There are other objects and scattered caves on the sea floor, but none of you have seen them yet.

The five pods smash through various objects as they land and hiss open unseen. One of them pierces through the rusted remains of an ancient car, landing under it.

One strikes a whale, which shrieks from the pain of being shot through by a miniscule rocket pod. Nothing major is damaged though, and the pod smushes into the sand below.

Another causes a cloud of dust to form from the impact between it and some old bones of somekind. it lingers.

the fourth pod slices through a kelp tree and impacts the sand next to it intact, while the last pod strikes a cave, bounces off, and lands at the entry to the cave.

In the sands beneath the Whale a small pod, only fifteen or so millimeters long and twice as thick, popped open. Out of it swam a swarm of tiny tiny creatures. Green, with uncountable appendages, they swam out looking around with their huge eyes and tasting the water with their long flexible snouts.

About half of them swam upwards to where several huge drops of blood were slowly dispersing towards the water. They surrounded one of these red clouds and started to vibrate their appendages at great speeds. As the blood got trapped in them limbs they quickly ran their proboscis though them sucking out the blood and storing it inside to be used as food.

The other half went down to the floor and stuck their legs into the sand, there they started to vibrate, kicking particles of sand up into the air and burrowing down into the sand. After hollowing out a area large enough that it started to threaten to cave in beneath the weight of the sand up top they each sucked up small quantities of limestone particles and some other materials, then they swam upwards.

Meeting each other, the blood gatherers gave the collected blood to the diggers and they swelled red with blood. Then they quickly used the energy of the blood in a fast biochemical reaction heating their innards to over 1500 C. The collected particles quickly melted together in a gray mass. Become this cooled the diggers swam down to their lair and quickly spit out the cement, gluing the sand together and finishing the first living area of the Kriblits.

In the belly of death a tiny pod full of new life opens. Out of it popped numerous small brownish blobs, bumping into each other briefly exchanging packets of excited information.

For a moment nothing seemed to happen, but then other small cells began to sprout from the tiny blobs, and more, and more... Growing out from the pod the Caerri began to look like a mat of some kind of vegetation, sending out streamers of cells many times the length of their body to search for food. Drawing and and casting these strange fronds like nets to catch whatever organisms they may.

A much smaller portion of the Caerri created a thin mantle which could draw and expel water, these Caerri went and began to explore the bones that they had landed on, searching for any crevice by which the marrow of the great beast could be reached.

A swarm of Peretics jump out of the pod and immediately begin to harvest resources. Some Start to gather the small organic flecks drifting lazily around the interior. Others begin to tear apart the seats for fabric. And others start to collect the algae growing on it. All the meanwhile the overseer silently watches from atop the pod giving commands now and then.
