dust troubles
« on: March 06, 2011, 05:32:58 pm »

I had a runin with a forgotten beast with a dust attack. It killed a couple of dogs and a bunch of dwarves got hit with the dust. One of them also got a ripped tendon, but I digress. They all have a flashing white "X" and won't move. Why aren't they requesting a diagnosis and how can I fix the issue?

edit: it seems they were stunned, but there is also a bunch of forgotten beast extract all over the floor. It's all frozen, somehow, and it's all in the caverns. Why is this? Is it still dangerous? Will it ever unfreeze?

Of course, since he doesn't actually walk around counting things, we can only assume that bookkeeping time is spent in deep meditation, psychically sensing exactly how many piles of orthoclase there are. It takes a while to hone a skill like that.

Sounds like it gives complete bodily paralysis. That sucks.

Sound like magma is the only humane solution. I'm sorry. Dwarfane solution.

Burning and raping the land is recreational. Where business is concerned, though, sustainability is the name of the game.

As !!FUN!! as that sounds, they are all up and about again. I'll keep this updated with the outcome.

The only way to deal with deadly dust beasts is to chuck kittens at them until they die. When they use deadly dust they actually hit themselves with it, meaning each time they activate it there is a risk of them pushing themselves into a wall and killing themselves.

The "frozen" thing is just an artifact of how material templates work. It's just made of a material that's solid at room temperature; it hasn't been frozen by any special means.

And it's still dangerous. Designate the whole area as a restricted traffic area so people won't walk on it so much.

Flooding can be used with mixed results; it's hard to get rid of it completely, but you can force some of it down a drain or onto the walls where people won't touch it.

One dwarf is having trouble breathing, but still no other problems. I may have lucked out. I just removed the extract with dfcleanmap.

Sounds like it causes low-level paralysis.  Some FB cause instant necrosis of the brain, some cause mild tingling in the extremities.  They can't all be deadly...  Sadly, since you can't order dwarves to clean things, DFCleanmap is kinda your only option, aside from the glorious magma purge.

It would be FUN to water purge it and carry all that contaminant into a moat that you could dump siegers into.

I don't think contaminants will go up.

You don't seem to realize where you are.

We will find a way. We always do.

Granted, they won't go up via water alone...  Now, a dwarf with dirty feet, who walks through your moat...

You could always take your moat down to cavern level.
