"New Text Document.exe"
« on: March 06, 2011, 10:23:03 am »

I couldn't find a tech support board on this forum, so here goes.

Recently, when I've been starting up my computer (Windows 7), I am asked for permission to run a file, which is "New Text Document.exe". I have reason to believe it is a virus, but I could be wrong. Can anyone clarify this? And if it is a virus, how do I get rid of it? MSE can't seem to detect it.

Boot in safe mode and delete it if you want it gone.

MalwareBytes is a great tool for virus removal. I have yet to run across a situation in which an up to date copy of MalwareBytes has failed to clean up my pc. Spybot Search & Destroy comes with some great tools, although they can be a bit resource hogging, which can help avoid them taking over to begin with by doing things like prompting when something wants to edit a registry entry. For those nasty fake antivirus ones which take over your computer and lock you out of using programs and such, I've had it reduce them from their normal near total control to merely a popup window which can easily be removed with a malwarebytes scan.

And if all you are using is Microsoft Security Essentials for your scanning, I can almost guarantee you will find other things as well on your PC if your run those 2 programs. So even if you do take care of that problem, I would suggest running their scans anyway.

Yes, it's a virus. To get rid of it:
Boot in safe mode and delete it if you want it gone.

Yeah, there are other people reporting it as a virus...oddly enough, from 2008 (EDIT: ...and 2001, and early 2010.). Perhaps the creator decided to make an updated version? It can apparently appear in both .pdf and .exe formats (I'm guessing the former is to appear more innocent, where as the latter could do more harm if allowed to run.)

It's also called Rootkit.KInject by the sites I visited, so I guess that's the virus's real name.

Cool, MSE finally found it. Thanks for the help.

EDIT: Also, for anyone else who may have this, the program disguises itself as jsuched.exe too.
