Mixing food with cooking
« on: March 06, 2011, 09:10:07 am »

The wiki for cooking says you have a higher chance for a happy thought with better quality food because there is more chance for the dwarf to get something he/she really likes.  But my cooks almost always makes food using all the same items - quarry bush stew made with quarry bush leaves + quarry bush leaves.  Yes, I have mix food on.  Seems they always choose one item and only mix food when the first ingredient runs out.

Shouldn't a cook prefer to use different ingredients?

you would think, it seems more based on what ever is closest to the kitchen, this has annoyed me to no end with my brewer as quiet often i will have to say, please stop brewing plump helmets we have 300 ales from that and a million and a half pig tales laying around.  of course with brewing I think  you can use the job manager to specify specific things.   I have also never understood why a dwarf prefers a plump helmet to a prepared meal even if they don't have a preference for them.

the truth is (at-least to me) is that cooking and eating needs an overhaul.  For one it is way to easy to provide enough food to feed every dwarf in your fortress, I think food and nutrition should be based on something different than 1 food = 1 meal.  I think the easiest solution is to base it off of the foods weight, as it stands 1 elephant is over 400 meals (at-least as of the last time i had elephants) and with infinite supply and a grandmaster hunter...or look at my current fortress which is supported by 5 chickens, each laying about 10 eggs average, 50 eggs is almost enough food for 16 dwarfs for a year.  any ways I am getting off topic

From the description of the event, I think that your copy of Dwarf Fortress was on drugs when this happened. That's surely the only logical explanation for a human werewolf with deadly farts dying from it's own excrement after slaughtering some goblins comrades.

you can disable cooking for specific ingredients on the z screen

thats what I do with ale, typically though on a mature fortress I have a lot of different food

typically, rock nuts, flour, cheese, pump helmets, and various meats, and in recent versions eggs, honey
