Does DF work with Vista?
« on: April 13, 2007, 07:54:00 pm »

I'm planning on picking up a new PC within the next week or so.  My main concern is will DF work with Vista?  And if so is there anything I  need to do to get it to work?

I think the quesiton that needs to be asked is "Does Vista work with Dwarf Fortress?"

Alot of people are having trouble with the new Windows Vista operating system and their games, so you should definitely AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE and simply get a PC that was made with Windows XP or Windows 2000.

Once Vista is as updated and fixed /repaired as all the other Windows OS's, Vista should work well with whatever games you have.

It's mostly driver issues, I've heard. I doubt that Dwarf Fortress is doing anything fancy, so it probably won't be an issue.

Yeah, there are a few vista threads here and there.  I gather the whole OpenGL might be a problem, and something about User Access Control or whatever it is slowing it down.  I can't afford Vista (or a mac etc.) so I can't play with this, but I'm sure I'll be over on Vista after this computer dies and I have trouble getting anything else.  Hopefully it will work well enough by then for me to continue the project.

Dwarf Fortress works like a charm on Windows Vista, no problems at all. Also, to Mechanoid, I gather you've never even tried Vista seeing how you bash it like that. You shouldn't believe everything you read on the internets.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

It's good to hear Vista will work with DF....else I'd have a major issue :D.

I agree that I'd like to wait a while until Vista stabilizes BUT this lappy is dieing quick and me getting a new PC within a week or so is about as long as my current one will last.

Would "work like a charm" be synonymous with "crashing spectacularly?"
I know several people with Vista and most find it even more annoying than XP.

No, it isn't. Instead, when I type "works like a charm" what I mean is that Vista has worked fine, hasn't crashed, and altogether has been nicer to use than XP has ever been. Too bad if some people you know don't like it. But from what I've read on the net, most people who tell you that Vista is complete crap are the people who don't even use it, such as yourself.

Does that apply to Dwarf Fortress then?   :D

But yeah, bashing Vista is way too easy, just look at how many features they had to cut and still the stuff they kept lacks some polishing. The only real reason to ever get Vista will be to have support (business) or get DX10 (gamers). But as long as XP is supported and DX10 titles are rare, why bother?

of course   :D

vista is the garbage that comes out of industrial plants and the like.

dwarf fortress is the garbage that comes out of rich people areas. the kind you'd love to dig through to find perfectly good stuff like laptops and whatnot that they threw out cause they were getting a better one, not cause it didnt work    :p

Although its a resource hog, i think they did a pretty darn good job with vista.

Caveat: i got a new computer with vista on it so i didnt have to deal with any driver incompatibility sillyness

Vista is basically Mac OS X in a Windows form.  If you want that kind of flash, and the widgets, just get a Mac. =)

I kept Windows 98 (first edition, even) for as long as I could, then upgraded to Windows XP when Windows 98 wasn't recognised as a legal installation destination for games*.  I've had almost no BSODs since my Windows 3.1 and 95 days.

* Which is stupid, because Windows 98 is also a Win32 operating system.  There's no reason that a game shouldn't be able to install to Windows 98 other than the fact that Microsoft wanted people to upgrade and denied DirectX on that system.  It's not like maintaining a FAT32 version is really that different from an NTFS version.
