damn aquifers
« on: March 05, 2011, 12:22:58 pm »

So far the only successful forts ive created are in perfect areas. Looking for a new challenge i embarked in evil terrain (zombie elephants and the like, luckily i embarkeed on the otherside of a river so they cant get to me yet), but i am struggling to get past an aquifer. How many layers deep are they usually? i have at max 3 layers of terrain i could drop through but that might fail miserably. Any other methods that are more likely to work?

Use pumps, go for the good old fashioned Moses effect.

I cant recall having seen an aquifer thicker than 2 layers, which means that the non-aquifer layer beneath the 2nd is also off limits, else you'll flood from the ceiling, but for purposes of getting through it's only 2 you have to deal with.

I cant rule out the possibility of 3 layers, though.

I'd say, drop a core as deep as you can, then use a pumping setup to get through whatever is left.

To core drop multiple layers, you'd probably have to do it multiple times, so make sure your first dropped core is large enough to have a second one carved out of its middle.

In order to improve the universe's frame rate, we must all throw rocks into volcanoes and then do absolutely nothing, worldwide, for a week, to take pressure off pathfinding.
or maybe throw them into the large hadron collider to atom-smash them instead.
Not to mention to throw all available animals into tiny pits.

Aquifers never seem fun to me, so I just use the lazy newb pack and turn the aquifers off completely.  The one alternative that everyone uses, to cave-in breach the things, seems like nothing but a cheesy workaround that accomplishes the same thing, removing the challenge of an aquifer.  In other words, just turn the damn things off(remove the aquifer tags from the stone/soil types).

Unfortunately that may require a world regen in your case. :/

If you want to go legit tho, the way to do it is to use pumps to remove the water while sending down dwarves to build walls(or smooth walls if you're dealing with rock aquifer) which will stop the flow, then digging deeper and repeating the procedure.  This will get rather tiresome after more than 2 layers of water tho.

I can't remember the last time I saw only 2.

You only need one available droppable layer to get through any number of layers of aquifer using the 'dropped ring' method.  See this thread where I posted some screenshots of the process.

Just try it! Its not like you die IRL if Urist McMiner falls into magma.
