partial skeletons in 31.18
« on: March 05, 2011, 08:16:07 am »

Hello there! I don't use 31.19 for some reasons yet, and 31.18 doesnt have "butcher skeleton" options. So what do I do with all this partial skeletons thrown around. I noticed lately that only enemies my dwarves kill leave some bones afterwards, but not enemies killed by trap or caravan guards or falling into my pitfall trap. So what should I do to get bones and skull except for butchering live animals?

I'd put a butcher's shop or two next to the refuse stockpile. If there is something butcherable there, it will be butchered. Random animals killed by the military are butchered just fine. I think other junk, like dead goblins just needs to rot away till is disappears, and isn't usefull for anything. Dwarfs just won't butcher sapients.

Skeletons of sentient creatures - goblins, elves, humans - cannot be butchered, and rarely if ever decay to bone on their own.  So there's really nothing you can do with them.  The same goes for any tame animals of yours that die from any other cause than being slaughtered at a butcher's shop.

Specifically, the only way to get a bone is to have a body part that gets disconnected prior to death. This means you can get elf or goblin bones from arms that your dwarves chop off as they're killing them but never ever from skeletons that are left after they die.

I've also never seen the skeletons/partial skeletons decay away. I've taken to atom smashing them to get rid of them, since there doesn't seem to be any other way.

Problem with body parts is that there seems to be no reliable ways of disarming and dislegging goblins. Axes kill them to quickly, same for large serrated discs, and drop from a tower kills them outright.

While you atomsmash dead goblins, you might want to do the same for any hair, cartillige, and vermin is refuse stockpiles.

From what I've read, although never implemented myself, a really long drop (30z or so) causes a goblin-splosion at the bottom that will leave you with *lots* of limbs for decay.

I do agree, though, that dwarves with axes who know what they're doing don't leave you with a lot of limbs lying around. Haven't played with weapon traps, but it doesn't surprise me.
