Fun with Ping Times!
« on: March 05, 2011, 03:38:33 am »

So for the past week or so I've been experiencing far worse than usual latency on my home network. We're talking pings over 500 ms being common and going as high as 1500 ms. Sometimes it can drop a bit lower but not often enough! This has the adverse effect of making online gaming nigh-impossible. Source engine games won't even connect at all.

So far I have tried two different routers (wireless by necessity, too much space to cover in this house amongst the multiple machines) with the same result. I have also done a test with just the cable modem wired into my NIC and all the latency was gone. Logic would suggest this means there is something not quite adding up. Download/upload speeds are still fine, this problem seems to exclusively do with ping times. I have also since set my wireless channels to the clearest based on an InSSIDer reading of neighbouring connections.

I'm a little stumped at what my options are. I don't really want to buy a new router even though 5 Ghz is mighty tempting. I already have Wireless N in the router I'm using now (newly upgraded to DD-WRT in the vain hope that some effect could have come of it).

So, I'm looking for any suggestions people might have for things that could be done with this issue.

Its your ISP, your internet provider must really suck or something, what country do you live in?

Quote seems to contradict that diagnosis.

I definitely checked without my wireless routers involved, and  the ping was entirely gone. Back down to 20 ms pings.

Maybe something's wrong with your computer's wireless adapter?

It shouldn't be but that's a possibility I haven't tested out yet. I'm going to go run Pingtest or something on the next nearest system and see what results

Hmm, getting a lot of mixed results all around, god I hate networking. Pretty close to just digging out a long ethernet and being done with it.

..and now it's acting fine on my system. Ugh, something in the setup is totally un-right. I have no idea really. it can go for days at a time over 500 ms but right now:

...and it's degraded again. I moved the router out of the closet we were keeping it in to about 5 feet from my PC and I get this:

Raaaaaaagh

Still possible it could be the NIC though, but there were occasional problems appearing on the other systems..sigh this is irritating to deal with.

Welp.

Guess it isn't the NIC: just got similar resources upstairs on one of the laptops. Sigh.

Huh. Bought a 10 foot Ethernet and plugged into the router now:

This is promising although I'll have to test it longer term (next two days) to see if it stays good

Talked to my ISP again and got the root cause, apperently my cable is 'flapping' and has been for a month, a technician will be out tommorow.

Kind of a load off my back, only one thing I might need to buy :P

ugh, i'm getting 94ms to Seattle and I'm in NYC. I feel for you. I get periods every few days where I get this type of interference for hours.

Are you near Yakima?

Up in Canada actually, for some reason there are no Pingtest hosts in Vancouver or area.

I only ask because there is a magnetic/sonic lab with a very large dish in Yakima that is known to disrupt communications(and cause migraines) when operating.

looks like Yakima's the south side of their state so I'm fine for that.

Gaaaaah the cable guy came, looked at the lines, measured signal etc, replaced my modem entirely for free with a newer model..and I still get the same ping FML

:( I used to get that too.

Eventually, I think, they fixed the box at the end of the street.

but not for over year.

Ugh, yah. They're expensive boxes so I can see why..but if they don't fix it I'm moving to DSL probably immediately. Fuck their $50 a month for broken service
